You might be surprised who the government considers too fat, too skinny, and just right(Photo: Getty Images)
When Furious 7 set box-office records on its opening weekend, there was one story lurking in the shadows of the celebrity-industrial complex that no one wanted to talk about: The star, Vin Diesel, is overweight.
And costar Dwayne Johnson? Dudes obese. Johnson has a body-mass index, or BMI, of 34.3. Which means, according to U.S. government standards, the Rock is obese. And Diesel, at 27.1, is overweight.*
... ...
...They published their first set of weight-for-height tables in 1942, and then updated it in 1959. The U.S. government started using BMI in 1980 to establish cutoffs for what was variously described as ideal, desirable, suggested, or acceptable weight.
Originally, both the insurance industry and the government recognized something we all understand by virtue of basic biology and common sense: Humans come in two genders, several body types, and countless ethnicities. Each has a slightly different distribution of height and weight.

The Rock and Vin Diesel fat?!! Absurd. Lots of different body types and they are more “thick” and muscular. I bet a lot of the NFL guys (who can lift a Volvo) are considered “fat”, too. Sheesh....
And yet we'll all be judged by the same measure when government completely takes over healthcare, then denied benefits based on the same assessment of health.
Ridiculous...
I’m fixing to be 65 years old I’m 5-7 and 172, I wonder what they think I should weigh?
The Democrats want everyone nice and thin so that they can fit more people into the boxcars. Saves on fuel costs for them.
I fell afoul of this years ago in the military. I was then fitter and stronger than anyone in my circle of contacts but the military doc, flabby, flacid, and unfit as he was, checked his tables and labeled me as obese.
Well, by my scale, you should be about 8 ounces heavier. It's Saturday, and we should all be relaxing this afternoon with a cold one.
Well, that's my scale. Lol - cheers!
It’s crazy! In high school I used to wrestle and my weight during season was about 192. That’s nearly obese for me nearly at my prime.
Yep. When the weight control program first started in the Army, I saw a big, strong, former NFL lineman get thrown out.
Look at the Army. They weigh people twice a year, but never have an IQ test.
And we wonder why we can’t win wars.
Yes, I gave up on paying attention to these standards when I heard that Tom Cruise was fat.
But, I myself am fat now even if Cruise and co. are still slender.
LMAO.
I’ve lifted weights and exercised for years and have never come anywhere to being in the “ideal” ht / wt ratio but to look at me you certainly wouldn’t consider me fat...
IMHO... it is viewing the larger males of our society as “bad” or “unfit”. Look, there are all types of body shapes and sizes (all the morphs.. endo, ecto, meso... if I remember these well). A muscular guy who is a bit thicker is just that.. a muscular guy who is a bit thicker. Seems to me the socialist view wants males to be “weaker”.. at least weaker in appearance.
Interestingly enough, back in the 70’s in the USAF, I administered our Base fat-ass program. (a 4 month stint while my discharge was delayed).
Digging through the regs I found a section that provided for measuring biceps(the circumference). We had a body builder that was on the weight program with this exact problem. The bicep waiver got him off the program. I zerox’d the page, gave it to him so he wouldn’t get hassled anymore.
This made him very happy, but word got out, and every fat-ass in the program wanted their biceps measured after that. Their biceps weren’t near big enough.
The BMI is an ultra simplified metric that was designed to track health trends in populations. It’s basically a statistical tool. It was never intended to be meaningful when applied to individuals.
I’ll go by your scale.
One problem I have with the BMI is that it is weight divided by height squared. When you are taller than the baseline height, I would expect you to be proportionately wider side-to-side and thicker front-to-back so the "ideal" weight would be proportional to the height cubed. With the square term all tall people like Johnson who is 6'5" to would have to be shaped like a bean pole.
The dems want to control the food supply.
Everyone will have to eat seeds, a few nuts, rice, beans, and plain lettuce. Meats will be too expensive.
THEY, on the other hand, will eat as they please.
