An 86-year-old nun was reportedly gang-raped before being murdered in her bedroom at a South African missionary.
Gertrud Tiefenbacher's hands had been tied with a typewriter cord and a towel placed over a face, say local police.
Her body was found by other nuns at the Sacred Heart Missionary in Ixopo, a small town 85 miles south-west of Durban.
Police in KwaZulu-Natal are waiting for the results of forensic tests to confirm that Sister Gertrud was sexually assaulted.
They say she was suffocated but they are unsure how many men attacked her. A small sum of money - thought to be in euros - had been stolen from her room.
The victim's friend Betty Firmstone, 85, told South Africa's Daily News: 'I met Sister in 1952 when I started teaching at a school attached to the mission. We worked very closely together. She loved her work with children.
'This really was an act of savagery against a gentle, caring soul.'
Sister Gertrud had lived at the missionary for 60 years after moving to South Africa from her native Austria.

I’m not sugarcoating anything. I’m saying quite correctly that the Xhosas in Transkei had more rights and a better country than Kenyans living in Kibera. But Transkei was never recognized as a country by the UN and most of the world due to an insane prejudice against Whites in South Africa.
Today, boys are still surfing in Durban’s Bay of Plenty but the crime rate makes life on land much tougher for all the races of Natal.

That’s false. Some tribes were moving south while the Dutch settlers were moving north, but Bantu tribes were still within the modern borders of South Africa and neighboring countries.

Which still doesn’t excuse apartheid. Saying they had it better than someone else is essentially meaningless. There’s always someone who has it better or worse if you look hard enough.

You contradict yourself and prove my point. Since the Boers were ALREADY there, the blacks, who were beginning to move into the territory, were the newcomers. And many other blacks were brought into South Africa, as slaves, by the Zulus, from other areas outside of what is now known as RSA.

How is having more rights essentially meaningless to you? Do you not give South Africans any credit for building up that country to what it became? Why did Blacks continue to migrate into South Africa in spite of “White rule”?
No, most of the rapes, especially that of children and babies, are black on black.
As grotesque as it might sound, there is a common belief in Africa that raping a virgin will cure AIDS. Infant girls have been a common target. But they can't talk, and say who raped them. Hence the murder of an 89 year old nun.
