The Apple Watch is Already Wiping the Floor with the Entire Smartwatch Market
Business Insider ^ | Thursday, April 16, 2015 | Rob Price

Posted on 04/16/2015 5:29:23 PM PDT by Star Traveler

The Apple Watch is on fire: KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo estimates that Apple's debut smartwatch has sold more than 2.3 million units since preorders opened, MacRumors reports.

Apple hasn't released any sales data on Apple Watch sales, and it most likely won't until the company's quarterly earnings report. But this 2.3 million figure echoes what others have estimated — the research company Slice believes there were about 1 million US preorders on launch day, for example.

Ming-Chi Kuo has a good track record on Apple: He was spot on with his predictions about the iPhone 5S, for example. If Kuo's figures are correct, Apple has — in a stroke — cornered the entire smartwatch market.

The Apple Watch's strong sales are bad news for Google and its Android Wear smartwatch operating system OS. According to Canalys, devices using Android Wear sold 720,000 units in 2014. Slice's figures suggested Apple was able to easily breeze past this figure in a single day. In doing so, Apple took away Google's one historical advantage, which Business Insider explained in a previous story:

The iPhone has always — with some truth — been considered the "rich man's phone." Apple customers tend to be better off than Android users and spend more on apps and in-app purchases. Accordingly, ad rates on iOS, Apple's operating system, are higher than on Google's OS.

This strong push is immediately going to make Apple's Watch OS an extremely attractive platform for developers looking to move into wearables, especially when coupled with the purchasing power of Apple consumers. And as this app ecosystem develops, it will make the Apple Watch even more attractive compared with other smartwatches, consolidating Apple's position further still.

In all my previous transactions with Apple (online) ... I’ve always been charged immediately, and there’s never been an exception to that ... not even one time.

And, I’ve even bought a product online (from the online store, not an Apple product) which I asked to pick it up in the store ... and even though the products were not available for me to pick up in the store until several days later (I seem to remember 5 days) ... I was charged immediately.

I’ve NEVER ONCE in all my years with Apple ever had the charge delayed on anything I’ve bought from them or the online store.

So, I’m talking from my own direct experience. The only thing I can say about THIS ... is that what you say is TOTALLY DIFFERENT from every one of my prior purchases.

As I like to say, and have many times ... the Apple Watch is not a watch. Once someone understands that, then it will make sense ... :-) ...

It is a wrist computer that has over a thousand apps for it! And in relatively short order there will be THOUSANDS of apps!

“ONE” of those apps just happens to tell time.

Those are things I’m sure I’ll use many times every day without needing to fish for the phone and unlock it yet again. And it’s all stuff that is perfect for a small device on my wrist. And... It’s a watch too. :-)

That is one of the best nutshell recaps of the purposes of the Apple Watch i've seen. Bravo, Ramius. You've stated the reasons I am getting one as well. I selected the Apple Watch in Space Black as it will go better with the rings i usually wear. (I thought hard about the rose gold Apple Watch Edition, but in the end, although i could easily afford it, decided no.)

the average iphone user only uses about 25 apps per month.

it’ll be far less for the watch.

“Apple has managed 50% [of the 4.6 million bands] in less than a week.” Impressive. I would buy the iWatch if I could afford it. Yes, the leader, Mr. Tim Cook, is breaking the Ten Commandments and is flirting with hell. Yes, I pray for him and use the Apple stuff: it works smoothly and has excellent fonts.

I enjoy inputting and learning from the comments here.

Sorry , a watch that cannot function as a watch will NEVER make sense, a watch cannot run out of juice everyday, it’s a MAJOR FAIL... the iPhone can successfully make and receive phone calls... they are essentially the same device but the “watch” isn’t ready for primetime... The original iPhone wasn’t ready for primetime either but it had enough potential in the largely useless non-phone/”internet enabled computing device” functionality that people could excuse the lapses.

Please explain to me how a one inch by one inch screen will ever be usable for any function ... will you be able to edit a document on it? Will you ever be able to read a map on a screen that size? Will you even be able to read a text message? Can you name ANY app out of the “thousand or so” that you mention that will ever be usable on this tiny screen? The answer is NO ... That means that this is not only NOT a watch , it isn’t what we now consider to be a phone (meaning a smart phone) , it is fashion and nothing more... and fashion goes out of fashion. If it ever morphs into something truly usable, a “Dick Tracy” phone ,,, say with a long battery life , usability without being tethered to a mothership iPhone and native GSM phone capability then it deserves a look.

Perhaps it’ll be useful by the 3rd generation or so.

The significance of over a thousand apps (later to be THOUSANDS) is not that people will load the thousand ... but ... that the consumer has almost infinite choices to fit just about any need you could imagine. Each person will have a different selection.

Having said that, I decided to take a quick look on my iPad (for a comparison) to see how many apps I’ve got there. It lists 383 Apps!

I don’t actually use all 383, so I’m going to work down the list and get rid of some. I’ll probably end up with 200 I think. And it’s not that if you have one of a “kind” of app, that’s all you need. It doesn’t work that way. For example, I have about 10 weather apps. Each one has slightly different features and I’ll rotate to different ones, depending on what I want at the time. So it’s pretty easy to end up with 200 apps and use them all.

No , the market for watches is unchanged. The market for the functional equivalent of a bluetooth remote control for your iPhone has emerged... IT's NOT A WATCH AT ALL , IT's AN ACCESSORY FOR THE iPhone ... NOTHING MORE My prediction is that this non-watch will never perform it's stated function , being a watch , with any success... Face it ... My Seiko tells time perfectly and uses a single $0.99 battery every 5 years or so. The iWatch fails with a dead battery every stinking day. How is that an advancement? It's display is too small to make use of ANY application that you may be able to execute... unless you make the "watch" "phone" sized that will always be the case... This is a FAIL , Apple has jumped the shark with their foray into the jewelry business. I can get a Rolex priced gold band... Can I get it bedazzled? Will it ever be able to tell the time better and with less fuss than your typical $5 Chinese watch from Walmart?

And you know all of this exactly how? You've obviously never even used one for even one second, much less a full day. Ergo, you are pulling these criticisms out of your nether orifice. Again, you are assuming it is merely a timepiece, and keep comparing it to a $5 Chinese piece of junk that will fail within two months when the hands fall off, or your wrist turns green with verdigris stains.

YOU want it to be a standalone watch while Apple intended it to be an accessory for the 450 million iPhones that it can be used with. Too bad you don't get to decide that it must be a stand alone watch that only tells the time, then you could call it the Neddermeyer Watch instead of the Apple Watch. By continually harping on its ability to "tell time" better than another watch, you are focussing on a single app out of over a thousand that are already available for a device that merely occupies the location on the body traditionally held by a time piece. . . but while it does provide a quick glance of the current time, it also provides notifications of incoming messages to allow you to know if you have to pay attention to them, alerts, phone messages, answer or initiate a phone call, and monitor your exercise regimen, etc. . . all without having to dig your phone out from your pocket, purse or briefcase. Add the ability to unlock electronic doors, bypass security, and pay for goods and services with Apple Pay, again without digging your phone out, it offers a level of convenience the iPhone or any other phone does not offer.

(People buy iPads, iPhones, iPods, iMacs, Apple Watches ... and not a person’s sexual orientation ... LOL ...)

You are the perfect representative sample of a typical Christian. That’s exactly why the homosexual lobby makes companies quake in their boots and makes them think 4 times before offending gays, and why the much, much numerous Christians are kicked in the teeth almost on a daily basis with hardly any thought wasted about it. I hope you feel very superior about it! Congrats!

The true believer Fanboies have been called into the fray.

In one fell swoop, you insult 700 plus members of Freerepublic who happen to be interested in subjects related to Apple products. Do you REALLY want to do that? Are you really that idiotic? Apparently you are. 700 . . . you are really outnumbered and you just insulted each and every one of them. Nice going.

The last keynote at Apple pretty well illustrated how useful and functional the Apple Watch is. Take a look at that on the Apple website. You’ll see some good examples of what you can do.

As far as a “watch function” ... my desktop computer has a watch function on it. My iPad has a watch function on it. My iPhone has a watch function on it. AND ... an Apple Watch has a watch function on it, too.

BUT ... if you think the Apple Watch is a “watch” ... you are not going to “get it”!

Pre-sales are handles differently. The products are not ready for shipment and Apple will not charge your card until they are ready to ship. They will charge your card when they ship. I have done this before.

None of the many products I buy (Apple or anyone) have a “sexual orientation”. I don’t buy my products for their sexual orientation. In fact, I don’t even know the sex of any of my products ... :-) ...

Nah, I'm not easily insulted. You can't insult someone who runs a Windows Ping List, it's just impossible! :)

Besides, epithets like "fanboi" bounce off my shining Shield of Invincibility (the one with Steve Ballmer's picture on it).

FWIW, I don't see myself getting an Apple Watch, as I eschewed all forms of watches, bracelets, and similar adornments (practical or otherwise) decades ago and prefer my forearms naked. NAKED!

You see, it's easier to wield the aforementioned Shield with naked forearms.

NAKED! (oooooh....)

Okay, I'm going to sleep now, it's past my beddie-bye time...

Reminds me of a limerick...

There once was a man from Racine,
Who invented a F**king Machine.
  Concave -and- convex,
  It could serve either sex,
And it played with itself in between.
Okay, now I'm DEFINITELY going to sleep...

You obviously never used the iPhone when it came out. . . and it was so far beyond anything that existed at the time it was truly a new paradigm in phones. You show by your comment above you don't have a clue what you are talking about when you say the iPhone "was not ready for prime time" when it became the prime time.

As for the rest of your screed. . . you are criticizing something you haven't touched, tried on, or probably even seen in person. . . and you are talking through your hat. You have no experience at all to claim what you are claiming. . . especially when people who wrote reviews who HAD used the Apple Watch disagree with you strongly. . . and say it CAN do the things you say are impossible. You are literally ignorance on parade when it comes to the Apple Watch. . . and you keep at it, far beyond your use by date.

I have seen the lines of these yahoo’s going all the way around the stores and they are living in their parents basements much, much too long.

The games and grass have taken their tolls on the Occupiers and they will be relegated to the chapter of history as the most unproductive generation of our society.
