The duo suggests that alien-like ships traveling at relativistic speeds can easily intermingle with photons in the cosmic microwave background, which is dubbed CMB. This means that a spacecraft traveling at near light speed would leave a unique signature, and this means it would therefore be fully discoverable.
Their research, which was just published in this month's MIT Technology Review, points out that the interaction with photons in the CMB should create a drag that imposes specific limits on how fast spacecraft can travel.
And, it should also produce a unique signature of relativistic spaceflight that ought to be visible with todays technology should any vehicles of this type be zipping through our galactic neighborhood.
A high speed moving spaceship regardless of its size would appear as highly powerful gamma rays once colliding with microwave photons.

Science I don’t understand ping.
Detected.
The aliens could mask their ship’s warp signature by remodulating its plasma injectors. Everybody knows that.
Spock was doing that over 40 years ago
This has been on my mind for the last two weeks...almost like a vision.
P.S. They're very tall
So if someone detects gamma rays he can say that it shows there was a spaceship. Keeps the grant money flowing.
Assuming there are aliens out there.
You probably mean doing that in 400 years from now. lol
And how will this interact with relativity? Star Trek maintained the unreality of simultaneity. Any ship we detect could be millions of years old.
How about technology to detect illegal aliens crossing into the US.
I didn’t know Tommy Chong worked at Raytheon.
"The music! It translates as 'chickenhawk'! Why do you think they are naked!!!"
“The aliens could mask their ships warp signature by remodulating its plasma injectors. Everybody knows that.”
Unless you use the same stoiciometric ratio on the after burners you’re just wasting your time.
Nice concept, but can detect only craft from same or similar tech level to ours. Everybody else uses FTL drives of different sorts. The really high civilizations, just step through from place/world to place/world.
But light signals associated with that event will not reach our galaxy for another four gigaparsecs (sic ;).
