SkyPilot, good thread, and good to “see” ya! I’m fixing to jump on a Mooney M20E; 5K less what I bought it for, and 15K less what I sold it for;-)

I had a CJ-5 that I bought from a friend in about ‘83. It was, I think, a ‘77. Had the high back bucket, 4 sp.(most were 3 spd’s) and the 304v-8. Dang thing would fly and go pretty much anywhere. No power steering and that was a bitch. No air either.

For those that don’t know, you can tell a CJ-5 from a 7 in passing by the hump in the doors in the 5. If I remember right they quit making the 5 because the extreme short wheelbase made it pretty darn easy to roll over. I should know. I had mine on 2 wheels a couple of times.

Sorry, no pics. I sold it in about ‘86. Wish I still had it. The thing about those jeeps were, if you weren’t made of money you better know how to work on one.

One piece of trivia I have never seen mentioned is that you could get an M151 inside an LVTP7 amtrac. Saw them put the jeeps into some of the tractors and then load the tractors onto railroad flat cars for movements.

Saw four flipped M151 accidents with two being fatal. I did not drive one much but I was careful after seeing those.

My daughter (who is 26, under 4 ft 11 inches, to dispel some comments about Jeeps being “for men only”,) bought a 2010 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo in 2011, new, for under $21,000 due to some great promotion and knowing someone who did a lot of detailing work for the dealer.

From what I have been seeing lately, it is worth almost what she paid for it, even 60,000 miles later.

She paid it off over a year ago, too, BTW.

I’ll second that. Went through a few in HS. Wished I could have kept any of them.

Didn’t they stretch the CJ7 in order to use a new transmission and transfer case? One of my brothers had three Jeeps at one time and would know I guess but he works a night shift so I shouldn’t call him.

Don’t let anyone dissuade you about the airplane. Some Yahoos will tell you it has “This” and “That.” Heck, every machine has “This” and “That”. Mooneys are great aircraft. Make sure the engine was majored, and hopefully the aircraft was loved and had a hanger now and then. But it will all work out! God bless and enjoy!

Thanks for this thread. I have always loved Jeeps and I am seriously considering one as my next vehicle. I am looking at the Patriot because I want something with a lot of room in the back area. I currently drive a truck, so I want some of that bed space in an SUV.

Is the ride of the Patriot more comfortable than a CJ from back in the day? Or maybe as comfortable as a truck?

What do you Jeep owners think of the quality of the vehicles over the past few years? Are you Jeeps reliable without lemon trouble or do you grin and bear it because of the Jeep name? Please let me know.

I take it you are not a fan of Yuppies commuting into Boston or San Francisco?

Love the pics.

I actually like the look of new Cherokee. My niece (who lives in the NE Ohio snow belt and really needs one) loves hers.

I swear you get their catalog less than a day after buying a Jeep.

I have a short daughter also. She drives the VW convertible I bought her, but will also drive a lifted Jeep.

I tried it in a chevy truck non 4 wheel and did not make it back in 1973.

Then in 1975 I did it in the VW Thing. TOP OF THE WORLD MA!

In 1986 I went up it again in a Chev pu but was stopped by snow.
Then to the top in 1996 in a Chev PU 4-wd.

A regular size PU will make it.

I used to shoe horses up that canyon back in 1973.
