A much-hailed law that restricted the opening of new stand-alone fast-food restaurants in one of the poorest sections of Los Angeles did not curb obesity or improve diets, a new study found.

City lawmakers passed the zoning ordinance in 2008 that limited the opening or expansion of fast-food outlets in a 32-square-mile area south of Interstate 10 that struggles with high obesity rates and other health problems.

The law, believed to be the first effort of its kind by a major city to improve public health, did not ban new eateries in strip malls.

The research by the Rand Corp. think tank found that obesity rates in South Los Angeles continued to rise after passage of the law. …

People want to eat what they want to eat. Educational efforts are one thing, trying to force-feed us all broccoli, yeast powder, tofu, and molasses is another.

Hmmm, so all you have to do is prove slow service to get the permit, then? How hard could that be?

If Hispanics can be considered a race (by the government), then why can’t Fat people be considered a race too?

Denying fat people fast food would be considered racist.

They could be considered diseased and have to be accommodated. They need their food fast before they lose and ounce and break out in a fit of health.

Becoming a fatso is an individual prerogative. ‘Keep your laws off our bodies’ to quote the pro abortionists.

Indeed. I really do respect her motives in this regard. But she does, well, look a lot more like “before” than “after.” Not the best casting for a credible program advocate.

It’s fine to respect motives, efforts and wants so long as the result is not forced unwillingly on the populace.

Government isn’t diet, nutrition or lifestyle or otherwise. It is simply and illegally enforcing its will on subjects.

Agreed. (That’s why I originally allowed that some educational efforts are fine — contrasting that with the forced feeding of “nutritious” yucko slop’— like they’re trying to do to our children, too, in our schools. We’re meant to be human citizens with liberty, not the government’s kept sheep ). Thanks

These same nanny-state libs have effectively shut down playgrounds and Phys Ed for 2 inane reasons:

Fear of kids getting boo-boos,
Interference with limited time for their indoctrination programs.

It’s easier for parents to supervise kids at home playing video games than it is for parents to take them to the park and supervise them there.

Love your comment about educational efforts. Try educating a 75 yr old man, that a CARB and Sugar equal the same thing in the body. When he complains about his gut being to large and his weight to high for his liking. Cut the Carbs and sugars, add more protein, veggies, and you will lose weight.

And that banana and grapes you consume every day is pure sugar. May be healthy, but is pure sugar calories. Move to berries, less sugars. Or add nuts to that bowel of kiddie cereal you insist on eating with toast every morning. In fact give it up. Eat a non sugar type cereal, the fewer the ingredients the better.

So nice that they know the singular cause of obesity.

If it were not for these predatory restaurants no one would get fat.

Obviously, obese people would not make bad choices without the deceptive marketing of fast food franchises.

Banning new restaurants didn’t lower the obesity rates only because it didn’t go far enough-if they were to shut down at least 90% of existing fast food restaurants, they would achieve their goal in reducing obesity.

To eliminate just one thing from your diet to reduce obesity, it would be Sucralose, aka Splenda. However, if you have been consuming it for some time, it would take months for your intestinal flora to recover on its own, so you need to consume probiotics and prebiotics to speed its recovery.

Also important that having a healthy flora is essential to stave off drug resistant bacterial infections.

Sucralose acts almost like an antibiotic against your healthy flora, but has no effect at all on a genus of bacteria with a clear association with obesity. The genus Enterobacter, on its own, can make a thin person fat, even if they eat the same amounts of the same foods.
