An Islamist preacher from Kuwait called for the demolition of the Giza pyramids and Sphinx "to put an end to idolatry and the worship of such pagan constructions."
"The fact that early Muslims did not destroy the pharaohs' legacy upon the Arab conquest of Egypt does not mean that we shouldn't do it now," preacher Ibrahim al-Kandari was quoted by the Kuwaiti Al-Watan daily newspaper Tuesday.
The call echoes that of leader of Islamic State (IS) group Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, who described the destruction of the historic monuments and archaeological sites as a "religious duty," Al-Ahram reported.
The alleged call comes a few weeks after IS group militants were seen in a video destroying Assyrian artifacts of in the Mosul museum in Iraq using sledgehammers. The destruction was described by UNESCO as a "crime against humanity."
During the reign of Islamist President Mohamed Morsi, another radical Salafist preacher issued a fatwa calling to destroy the Sphinx, or at least cover it in wax, claiming that the monument was worshipped by peasants as a god in the 14th Century, Youm7 reported. He also called for the destruction of Egypt's monuments citing Prophet Mohamed's destruction to the idols in Mecca in early Islam.
According to Youm7, the preacher went further and called for closing the Tourism Ministry building over "promoting prostitution and debauchery."

The way those are constructed a few tons of HE in the vaults and then charges to seal the shafts before it was detonated might not bring them down, but they will forever be just a pile of rocks.
They and the sphinx are one of the few things really worth fighting for over there imho.

If Egypt got The Bomb, and jihadists took over (again), I’ve seen it suggested that they’d nuke the Great Pyramid — however, it is too close to Cairo even for jihadists to pull that kind of stupidity. :’) In the case of the Great Pyramid, there’s a subterranean chamber, with a sloped passage leading to it, that would make a nice place to give this a try. But again, one of the most populous urban centers in the world would have to be evac’d first, with nowhere for the residents to go.
The Great Pyramid was opened during the Late Kingdom (or perhaps a little before, during the Persian occupation), and like other tombs and such in Egypt, was quite the tourist attraction. Sometime during the century or so preceding the Islamic conquest of Egypt, the local authority (I believe it was the Byzantine Empire) closed the thing back up. During the few centuries it was open, someone managed to cut four characters in an alphabetic script, they can be seen over the entrance, and are in a so-far-unknown language.
As you noted, the muzzie bozos couldn’t find the original entrance that had not been any great challenge to the earlier authorities.
