When the nation's top nutrition panel released its latest dietary recommendations on Thursday, the group did something it had never done before: weigh in on whether people should be drinking coffee. What it had to say is pretty surprising.
Not only can people stop worrying about whether drinking coffee is bad for them, according to the panel, they might even want to consider drinking a bit more.
The panel cited minimal health risks associated with drinking between three and five cups per day. It also said that consuming as many as five cups of coffee each day (400 mg) is tied to several health benefits, including a reduced risk of cardiovascular disease and type 2 diabetes.
"We saw that coffee has a lot of health benefits," said Miriam Nelson, a professor at Tufts University and one of the committees members. "Specifically when you're drinking more than a couple cups per day."
That's great news if you're already drinking between three and five cups each day, which Nelson and the rest of the panel consider a "moderate" level of consumption. But you know what? You probably aren't, because people in this country actually tend to consume a lot less than that. On average, Americans only drink about one cup of coffee per day, according to data collected by the United States Department of Agriculture. Even when Americans drank the most coffee they ever have, back in 1946, they still only drank two cups a day on average.
Interestingly enough, it isn't just people in the United States who drink less-than-moderate amounts of joe each day. No country in the world downs more than 3 cups each day per capita,

I can’t live without my pot of morning coffee! Usually Central American or East African beans; I grind them myself, process through Melita drip filter, add a lot of whole milk and — heaven!
Actually strong black coffee, even instant, is a great cure for migraines. Dilates the blood vessels.
Never brewed it myself, always some kind of restaurant or the like.
We got two new coffee makers for wedding presents 12 years ago, they are still in the box in storage.
That's why I found the lame-O left's attempt to start a Coffee Party to be so ill-informed. The jobless, Starbucks swilling protesters demonstrated, not only their historical ignorance, but at $4 a cup, financial foolishness.
Hideous.
I use an old stainless steel stovetop percolator and make one cup for the morning. I set it up the day before so all I have to do is turn on the stove. I eventually would like to stop the one cup. The 4 biggest things that suppress your immune system - alcohol, tobacco, sugar and coffee.
You just named the four food groups!
Black is the only way coffee becomes a health food. On an empty stomach is best.

What did you call me? :)
The husband had on FOX News this morning and they had on some doc talking about the foods we should eat. He recommended black coffee but gave no explanation as to why it should be black.
In a quick online search I was able to find benefits of coffee but no reference to why it should be black.
Perhaps they are saying to drink it black because the studies showing benefits would have used just black coffee so as not introduce another factor into the studies.
LOL .. I agree with your assessment. I too believe most of the studies included BLACK coffee.
And .. probably was done that way so as not to collide with other studies concerning the effects of too much sugar and fatty creamers.
Then, you know what happened? A teenaged daughter and a $50 dollar Starbucks gift card.
She got me started on those frozen Frappucinos. It just escalated from there.
Now, it's my favorite 15 minutes of the day.
