Groundhogs are prey animals and as such are more fearful than a dog or cat of strange things and nothing could be more disconcerting than have some arsehole rip you out of your den before you’re really ready [my pet groundhog never came out of hibernation before St Valentine’s day and even then he always acted like he needed a two-day dose of coffee] and hand you over to some nasty Democrat [animals can tell if you’re a jerk] and hoist you high. While groundhogs are very good climbedrs in a pinch they are still rather afraid of heights so I’m sure this one delivered a good bite- the mayor might have a nice ear perforation to hang sone jewelry from. I was bit by mine when I scoopped him up to keep him from getting attacked by a dog when he wanted to head for a hole he hadn’t dug yet.

The Groundhog Tradition is quaint and very charming, but I’m really surprised it’s still widely performed to this day. I say we can keep the stovepipe hats, keep the declarations of self reliance during the continued winter, and stop bothering that ground rodent to get an annual photo op.
