Dan Thompson is on his way out the door as CEO of fast food giant McDonalds. This is not terribly surprising, since the Golden Arches have turned in some poor numbers compared to their competitors for a while now. There are a few reasons for this, some of which came as a surprise to me, as outlined by my friend Stephen Green (a.k.a. Vodkapundit). One big factor which doesnt seem to make a lot of news is that the primary component of burgers is beef, and the cost has been on the rise.

So how would that affect McDonalds?
LOL! Uh, no, they’re quickly killing off EVERYTHING. That’s my slant on this information.
Don’t Burger King, Wendy’s, In-and-Out, Five Guys, Whataburger and many others use beef as their primary ingredient? How are they doing?
Lots of things are killing them.
I think they need to get back to their roots. They have tried to be all things to all people with their expanding menu and it does not work very well. Burgers, fries and a shake is what they need to concentrate on.
Anything remotely resembling fun or high fat is an endangered species.
I’ve said for years that McD’s could save itself by offering a “classic menu” that is headlined with fries cooked in beef tallow.
However, they are too short-sighted and too chicken of the Left to do nothing but offer McBlech.
Totally agree about bringing back beef tallow for the fries. Also, they pre cook the burgers and thrown them in a heat tray. They are dry and disgusting. McDonalds is killing itself with terrible food. It used to be a decent fast food burger, but it is awful now.
Their food sucks and it’s no longer cheap. You don’t need to be Warren Buffett to figure this out.
The left would like to kill the entire notion of franchising, being that it encourages entrepreneurship, capital formation, employment and rewards success.
No. McD’s failing to adjust to the new world is killing McD. The improvement of the American pallet that’s been going on since the early 90s has finally filtered down to fast food. McD used to be near the best (best easy to find national chain) of a market that was accepted to be bad. Everybody knew fast food was bad, but McD’s wasn’t THAT bad and so we were OK with that. But things have changed, there’s new fast food on the market, and the rise of “fast casual”, which is almost as fast as fast food but dramatically better in both food and ambiance. McD quite simply cannot compete in a world of 5 Guys, Sauce, Chipotle, and Panda Express. It also doesn’t help that the rise of McD is well documented and didn’t rely on a one time situation, so anybody wanting to build a McD style fast food empire can find out exactly how to do it just buying one of dozens of books.
The left keep thier low information voters on the plantation where the only descent meal they can afford to eat is now being taken away from them.
Doesnt McD’s still use the tranfats that are bad for the heart ? I stopped eating there.
The food.
It’s not good.
Burger King sucks worse, how they are still in business is a mystery.
As we get older people tend to watch much closer what they are sticking in their mouths...
At 56 I can no longer eat their marginal tasting food...my stomach can't handle it...
Except for their salads...
McDonald’s does have the worst fries when they go cold.
You can have my Big Mac when you can pry it from my cold, two all-beef patties, special sauce, lettuce, cheese, pickles, onions on a sesame seed bun, dead hands.
I also liked ordering a Big Mac in Germany where you could get a beer with it :-)
“I think they need to get back to their roots.”
YES!!!!
They are now trying to be a Starbucks, Denny’s, a “wrap” Taco Bell, Chick-fil-a, Dairy Queen, Orange Julius and McDonalds under one roof.
