My basil needs to be harvested. Have kept the plant going since 2010. I have started some tomato seeds, have more to go.
This variety is Principe Borghese especially suited for sun drying-low on juice with few seeds. Supposed to be good for sauces.
Hope everyone is staying warm and doing well. Have a great weekend. God Bless.
Pinging the list.
Also decided to pick up some cotton seeds. Dunno if it's going to do anything, but I figure I should at least try. The hops seeds have been in the fridge "stratifying" for a couple weeks now. They will stay until about the beginning of April, at which point I'll attempt to germinate them. I'm keeping my fingers crossed, at least.
Hey, I’ve just been looking at seeds on ebay and amazon. Getting some of those long asparagus beans that are hard to find around here and I also ordered some yellow radishes from Lithuania of all places. I do like trying a different thing or 2 each year. SO looking forward to this year’s garden. We have been enjoying our home canned stuff all winter and especially the sauerkraut. Love that stuff!
I’m trying to think of some new ways for a Hi-tech scarecrow. The “Billy Bass” I used before just isn’t scary enough, lol. The two songs “take me to the river” and “just a little song I wrote, be happy” didn’t quite cut it for scary. I’ll take that back, the whistling part of Be Happy was pretty scary, haha.
Started Australian Brown onion seeds last week- first time trying to grow from seed.
Should go in the garden in April.
Haven’t been happy growing from sets.
Plus it gives me ‘gardening’ to do in February LOL!
Snowdrops have already come up here in NC. Also daffodils and tulips have been poking up from the ground. The same ones that I thought I’d planted too late last fall. Monday I’m starting the Master Gardener program with our County Extension office. It’s an 11 week long program and after I’ll be expected to donate 40 hours of volunteer time to teh office. I’m really excited to be learning something new and useful.

We have almost no snow on the ground, very odd for January in Minnesota, it looks like early spring and I’m itching for gardening weather. After a couple years of gardening we are ready to expand the garden. Does anyone here use wood chips? We love the lack of weeds, had lush beautiful plants, but the plants didn’t produce much.
I was at the farm store buying a 40 lb. bag of black oil sunflower seeds for the birds and was waiting for them to load it. It took a while so I was looking around .... had no idea you could buy bags of worm castings! I think they were about $16/bag so out of my price range, but it was a new discovery for me.
Nice weather here in east central Mississippi, Meridian. Yesterday it was 74 - today 54. Lows in the high 30s. Next 10 days highs are only expected to be in the 50s. Hope this continues through Feb. and Mar turns warmer. It would be a dream!
lol The only outside gardening anyone is gonna do around here right now will have to involve a jackhammer or heavy equipment of some sort. lol
If you grow cilantro, let it go to seed, the next year you will have 20x as much without planting.
Took the garden tractor to the shop for long overdue major maintenance & repair; and brought home the tiller, all ready for another season or three.
Everyone has been surprised by a near record January thaw, due to end this weekend; temps hit 70+/- a few days. Seem proper to me, though: if we celebrate “Christmas In July”, then 6 months later we should have “Summer In January” . *<];-)
On 3 April 2015, I will walk out of my current job and become a gardener and woodworker (i.e. Retired!) We are planning our landscaping and expanded gardens, now!
I am getting real running hot water today after 10 years. I can't carry buckets of hot water anymore. Yay.

A very Sunny Spring is about to come to a very wet stop according to Lady Bender here on the left coast. Grandson has a girl type friend so we may have to hire some help clearing brush
Got my pepper plants started finally, eight seed types, six of each, and four hybrid Gypsy cuttings from last season that I overwintered (so far). I’ve got a bastardized Santa Fe Grande, which I guess I accidentally hybridized into a non-hot sweet pepper with very abundant yield. Don’t have any idea what to expect from the seeds. The others are: Cascabella, Corno di Toro, Tangerine Dream, Douce D’Espagne, Sweet Banana, Hot Anaheim, and Marconi Red. The Cascabella is supposed to be medium hot, less than Jalapeno. The Anaheim is hot, and the Tangerine Dream has a hint of heat, and the rest are sweet. Most will be grown in 5 gal buckets, might put a few in the ground, but I have a scarcity of sun.
I wasn't planning to make it so tall, but it occurred to me that by making it this way I wouldn't have to do as much bending and stooping to work in it, so I spent an extra $25 and built it one board taller.
I still need to paint it insided and out, and line the inside with plastic sheeting, which hopefully will extend the life of it by quite awhile. Built with treated lumber it would have outlasted me, but I don't really want that nasty stuff near where I grow my food.
