Looking at the glorious NON-EVENT that was this BS blizzard, I ask that we conservatives teach our friends how to see the dangers of the nanny state.
Think about it....media, politicians and "scientists" in the government all worked together to SHUT DOWN commerce, freedom of movement, etc.
I know this would be easy to let them off the hook and say "Well, they did their best, better safe than sorry, etc."
I think, however, that this splendidly demonstrates that these entities think of themselves as overlords who KNOW better than their citizenry how to conduct themselves in a potential crisis.
I grew up where schools shut down if the weather was REALLY REALLY bad, but NEVER did we have a governor threaten us with arrest or tell us to not open our business.
The American pioneers would laugh in the face of Cuomo, Malloy, Christie, and the rest. We should too.
Really, I don't need government to tell me to stay home in a blizzard — that is, IF there is a blizzard. But evidently, there are people who need government to them when to go to the can.
Did you grow up somewhere with real winters?
I grew up in the Cleveland area. While it happened rarely, there were times when police & local governments threatened to arrest people driving in very bad snowstorms and/or winter conditions.
I don't count on the ability of the average voter to do the right thing. I'm not sure I count on them to drive any better in a foot of snow & on icy roads.
unexpected . .
The Weather Channel named it Juno. Turns out they also did the best job forecasting snow amounts around NYC.
This just in: the new State Bird of Red Hampshire is ‘Henny Penny’.
Define “well”.
I would submit that people are fully capable of figuring out how to best pursue their interests.
I don’t oppose local authorities giving advice or suggestions...but that is enough.
Atlanta, too, was an anomaly—truly a rare event for them to get such icy conditions. Likewise, I would NOT blame the government for the actions that the citizens took....I mean, aren’t people capable of watching a weather cast and determining on their own whether to open their business, or go out driving?
I think so.
If that reverse troth was not present, we would have gotten slammed in South Jersey.
Between the two options, Ill listen to the weathermans forecast and take the appropriate measures
And that is what a prudent individual does.
But there is a whole different feel when you are ORDERED to stay off of your streets and sidewalks. Really? They banned foot travel????
Why yes, in effect they did. Ok...I can sort of understand cars so they do not muck up the removal efforts being stuck by the hundreds...MAYBE I could, in a spirit of community turn a blind eye.
But you are going to tell me I MUST stay indoors?
I do believe the proper response begins with a gloved middle finger.
You’re not. It’s idiotic. This was a total set-up. They wanted to build this up to a fevered pitch that so people DEMAND there be something done about “climate change.”
Now it’s not working in their favor, and God knows how they will spin this.
Having people stuck on interstates for over 16 hours fits any sane definition of not well. Atlanta and the state government ignored the forecasts and got caught having to deal with gridlock that prevented dealing with the road problems that ensued as a result.
They can’t predict weather in any detail. Better to be safe than sorry. Sorry I don’t see this particular non-storm as necessarily a political issue because conditions CAN get harsh in the SE. However I have seen overreaction by schools in the south to any slight weather pattern - which gets at your points. I just would not extend it to this particular weather event.
This was not an over-hyped storm. It simply tracked further east than expected, so New York City got six inches instead of two feet. But the two feet (and more) did fall ... just further east on Long Island and up into New England.
Oh, and we may have more coming over the weekend -- followed by Arctic cold next week. I don't think the groundhog should even bother coming out for a while. LOL.
The media got us to watch. Lot of hype. Scaring people. Works every time.
After the fiasco they never apologize.
Juno
Strongly warn people then leave them alone.
People were asked to stay home so the government wouldn't have to deal with them on the highways during the storm. People stayed home today. Many of them worked at home (like me). It's not like anyone expected a government official to come in and stock their refrigerator, then tuck them into bed last night.
