With reports that the NYPD is looking into as many as 63 threats against police officers, or the mayor this week alone, news also comes of a lack of motivation among the rank and file, undoubtedly contributing to a significant drop in arrest numbers across the city.
[Theres] just not motivation, one police officer told [Vice]. Im not writing people summonses if I have a chance of getting my head blown off. When asked if this was his own choice or a precinct-wide initiative, the officer added, Seems like the entire department is on the same page.
As the New York Daily News reported, citywide summons issued this past week numbered just 2,128, compared to 26,512 a week earlier. In that period, exactly one summons was issued in the 84th Precinct, where Liu and Ramos were stationedjust one.

The problem is that few will agree on what it is that cops are paid to do. My oath of office required me to enforce the laws of the state as enacted without favor or prejudice.
The trouble begins, even in the best run agencies, when those laws are unpopular or people think that the laws shouldn’t apply to them or apply their own Constitutional interpretation that doesn’t align with those of the courts. Then the cops are jack booted thugs who need killing. There are more than a few people here who think that way.
Now that having been said, there are too many (and even one is too many) LEOs and even whole agencies who are ill-disciplined, incompetent, corrupt, gratuitously brutal, arrogant and who act as though the Constitutions of the US and the states are something to be gamed, twisted, tortured and evaded. A disturbing number of these are Federal. This is why the duly elected representatives of the people must take an active role in setting and demanding adherence to high standards of performance and conduct. The electorate in turn must hold their representatives accountable for this responsibility.
“Not worth it...”
Well, at least he is stating the obvious - that it’s all about money.
You don’t see cops quitting en masse, so it’s “worth it” to have a taxpayer-funded pay check, it’s simply not enough to do the job as previously agreed.
This is a work slowdown, plain and simple. It will stop when they get more money, not one moment sooner.
“This is why the duly elected representatives of the people must take an active role in setting and demanding adherence to high standards of performance and conduct. The electorate in turn must hold their representatives accountable for this responsibility.”
Therein lies the problem! The “duly elected representatives of the people” are themselves among the primary violators of the very laws they write for the rest of us. Insider Trading, not illegal for your Congressman, but it is for you as an example.
Cops are the quintessential go along to get along group.
If nobody is arrested in Washington for things that just 8 years ago were crimes, then why should the people on Main Street be arrested for the petty things they do?
That's the root cause of the thinking, anyway.

that blows my mind! And only one in the area where the cops were shot. This news will encourage another Furguson. “Death Wish lll” with Charles Bronson comes to mind.
He used to get up very early every morning and say, "Time to make the donuts."
I do not blame the officers. Now, anarchy reigns. It is not a nation of laws. It is enclaves of strongmen. No thin blue line separates law-abiding from the lawless. It is every man for himself.
And yet the voters keep returning these critters to office. How is that the fault of the police? Any attempt at prosecution of a political figure becomes itself a political circus. See Starr v. Clinton. Most often it starts off political from the get-go as in Earle v. Delay. We need to be very cautious about encouraging police investigations and prosecutions of political figures. The civilian authorities need to maintain the upper hand and not have to look over their shoulders for a retaliatory prosecution.
The ballet box is where these things must be settled.
I agree. To be honest the rank and file of the NYPD are acting like thugs, protected by unions. I’d like to see them be more like firemen, putting the lives of innocents above their own. They have a difficult job but believe it or not it’s not the most dangerous. How about fishermen(127 deaths per 100k)? Police are 19 per 100k.
Anyone else decides to “not do the job” they lose the job.

The good news is the price of a loosey has been cut in half.
Not to derail this thread, but ALL violation of law carries the possibility of a death penalty. All it takes is a no-knock SWAT raid, or a resisting arrest scenario for someone to be killed over a trivial law. Washington said it himself, government is force.
Really? You believe this? The only laws that should exist are those one is willing to kill over, because the hand of government is force. This way, police dont have to risk their lives over stupid laws and the people will be much happier.
I have no issue with good cops who honor their oaths and act reasonably. Its the lack of honesty, accountability, and honor that is displayed by far too many police officers in this country.
Would you please answer post 53 and/or post 34?
For a new guy, you sure keep avoiding responding to posts.
Just saw a couple of libs (one a defense lawyer) saying not arresting petty criminals is a good thing. I tried to follow their reasoning, but they lost me.
One of the three branches of socialism is anarchism:
The cornerstone of anarchism is the individual, whose emancipation, according to its tenets, is the principal condition for the emancipation of the masses, the collective body. According to the tenets of anarchism, the emancipation of the masses is impossible until the individual is emancipated. Accordingly, its slogan is: "Everything for the individual."
Another branch of socialism is Marxism, in several ways the opposite of anarchism.
Agreed. The cops don’t write the laws.
We can call them bullies all day long, when it is the lawmakers who legalized the bullying.
Honestly, what are the cops supposed to do? Go out there and decide what laws they’re going to enforce, which ones they aren’t??
I’m a Tea Party Libertarian but -it’s wrong to put on the LEOs. It’ the freakin politicians who are the problem.

When from the top leadership on down, this includes our beloved President, laws and ethics are traded in for politics and financial gains this usually portends the beginning of the end of what was once a Great Society. How do you expect the average and plain citizen to respect the law when he looks up to his or her leaders occupying a variety of positions and finds that they are about as deceitful and crooked as they come and twist the laws each and every which way they can in order to suit their purpose. Western societies dont die from wars but gradually succumb to self inflicted suicide such as removing the guard rails of ethics, laws and common sense which has kept our society on an even keel. If things keep on going the way they are the future is questionable at best and more mayhem will be in the making.
