Images from space dont get more dramatic than this. Image processing wizard Stuart Atkinson zoomed in on one of the most intriguing views yet of Comet 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko, highlighting the contrasts of dark and light, smooth and rugged, soft contours and frighteningly vertical cliffs.

That almost looks alien!
I continue to be blown away by the fact that we can take such detailed photos of a comet from 20km away.

Not so scary when the gravity is maybe 0.0001 gee.

Good evening.
Does NASA know what the comet is made of?
I'd like to see some gold, and silver, and copper...
Thanks.

I don't see any "Re-Elect Sheila Jackson Lee" signs.
Did some "bigot" photoshop them out?

You have to look closely. They are right next to the American Flag the Apollo astronauts planted!

Not what I expected to see. We need to redouble our efforts at space exploration.

I assume the subject photo and its sisters were taken as the probe approached and not after landing. That said, I’d be curious to know how tall is the cliff in the image you posted. Unless I missed something, the blog post does not indicate any distance figures. It is a remarkable photo. For me the “gravity” of it is still sinking in.

Not so scary when the gravity is maybe 0.0001 gee. They claim the gravity of 67P is 1.5mm/second/second compared to Earth's 9.8 meters /second/second.

It's interesting how long I had to search before I found any numbers at all.
I would have thought such details would be interesting to most science readers.

Yeah, someone could literally jump from the bottom of the cliff to the top.
...And if you didn’t have any way to stop, you’d probably just keep on going. lol

But that is enough gravity to hold all the rock and even sand together as it flies through outer space at thousands of miles an hour with no atmosphere?
Awesome
