NFL admits Ed Hochuli erred on key penalty against 49ers
Yahoo Sports ^ | Dec. 15, 2014 | Ben Rohrbach

Posted on 12/15/2014 4:42:56 PM PST by Michael.SF.

On a third-and-5 early in the fourth quarter, Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson couldn't connect with rookie wide receiver Paul Richardson, but a roughing the passer penalty against 49ers linebacker Nick Moody bailed out Seattle. Instead of kicking a field goal to remain ahead by one score, the defending Super Bowl champions received a first down and scored a touchdown to go up 17-7 two plays later.

Wasn’t it a couple years ago that the NBA refs were caught making seriously bad calls for fun and profit? Not that anyone would bet on NFL games, point spreads, or anything like that .... probably just nickel and dime sport betting among friends at the worst.

Every now and then a game is decided by a bad call college and pro.

The niners have more problems than the refs

I'm a Seahawks fan, but I agree with the "bad call" assessment.

Wilson WAS hit hard, and with the 49'er defenseman's helmet down.

The only justification was that it might be considered "spearing" with the helmet.

They stayed away from Wilson's head, which is good.

Not sure I'd get TOO worked up about it.

As average as the Seahawks looked in the first half, they really DID look better in the second.

Fewer stupid mistakes like false starts at HOME.

BOY do they have to work on the penalties!

I think they would have still won, but I like a clean game.

The NFL uses part-time officials for exactly that reason. The ideal NFL official is someone with a prominent position in a respected profession who has his own professional reputation to protect. They really do want officials who look upon officiating as more or less a "hobby."

When you think about it, the money isn't even the issue. The NFL couldn't possibly pay officials enough money to keep them from throwing a game if they really wanted to.

I can’t watch 49ers games any more because the officials are so consistently biased in the calls against them. The opposing team can usually get away with murder and the 49ers players get flags and whistles at the slightest hint of what might be a transgression if somebody were to be squinting real hard and maybe notice a little something out the corner of their eye. Older kid and her husband are die-hard 49ers fans and regularly scream at the TV because of the idiocy of some of the calls.

I sincerely believe they’d be a much better team if they were allowed to play without the constant pressure of knowing that a b.s. penalty is coming their way within the next couple of downs.

That’s not what I said at all - why are you so dimwitted tonight? I said the NFL would not rig anything for a tiny bit more TV money - and they wouldn’t.

It’s called risk reward common sense. Sorry it escapes you.

This ref derailed the Patriots against the Packers three weeks ago. The calls against the Pats were so egregious that the network did not air replays.

Try being a Viking fan and having to play against them twice a year. We haven't gotten a break from the league since the earth cooled.

Refs make $10 grand a game plus expenses. The average ref takes home $200 k. A guy connected with Vegas like Hochuli can leverage that to make $millions, if he works for his masters correctly, IE, is not caught. But he is a lawyer, so he knows the rules of admissible evidence.

I worked in Aberdeen SD for a while and I learned of the rivalry. Good football nonetheless.

Agree 100%. The refs took total control in that first half and the Pats only got to play in the second.

And I thought it was just me.

However, a team does not go from the Superbowl to being this mediocre, (bordering on bad) in this short of a time frame w/o there being some serious issues, ones most likely regular fans are unaware of.

Yes, injuries played a part.

Most calls tend to favor the hawks when they play in Sea-addle.

>>You could pay for full time, since the league has money, but tough to sit around the rest of the time.<<

I could design a full-time curriculum/work schedule for refs faster than you could say “Flag on the play!”

"Most calls tend to favor the hawks when they play in Sea-addle."

Must disagree.

The Hawks are plenty penalized outside of Seattle.

But, it's because they get sloppy.

What kind of team gets penalized, TWICE, at home for stupid crap like false starts?

Why Pete Carroll hasn't kicked his offensive coordinator in the butt is a mystery.

I forget which recent game it was, but the Seahawks were penalized TEN times for 113 yards.

You don't repeat a championship with that kind of nonsense.
