It's like a scene from a horror film.
Residents of a California city are being terrorized by people dressed as clowns, some reportedly wielding machetes or baseball bats, police said.
"There's a natural phobia of clowns," Sgt. Joe Grubbs of the Bakersfield Police Department told ABC News today. "And, clearly, if someone is dressed up as a clown and holding a weapon in a threatening manner, that's going to frighten people."
There have been 20 sightings in a week, but only one clown has landed in cuffs. Bakersfield police arrested one juvenile last week for allegedly chasing other juveniles while in a clown costume. The 14-year-old suspect, who wasn't armed, told police he was participating in a hoax he had seen online.

John Wayne Gacy. ‘nuff said.
Lock and load
-— When I was a kid clowns were part of a circus act and made you laugh -—
Never liked them as a kid. That dislike turned into a creepy feeling as an adult.
You are not...
This is hard to believe it is real. How did they know the clown wouldn’t get shot?
I laughed and laughed at the video but man it was creepy.
I did, when I was very young, though I grew out of it fairly quickly.
The theory is something along the lines that young children, who are still learning to read faces, see a clown's exaggerated features as deformed rather than comical, and so they're frightening. Obviously a significant number of adults never grew out of that sensation, so they still find clowns creepy. Literary figures like It or the Joker play on that.
And mimes. Can we shoot them, too? Please?
The gas station scene was pretty clever. The rest of it was gross. I agree that some of those people appear to be acting.
I never heard about the creepy clown pranks until a couple of weeks ago when this video was being passed around. It’s amazing that these clowns aren’t being shot and that people aren’t suffering heart attacks when these clowns are jumping out at them.
Some clown jumps out at me and it will be the last thing he ever does.
Where was Jerry Brown when the clowns were spotted?.
If you’re referring to Rebo, I disagree. But maybe you’re just trolling.
Anyone can dress up any way they like. I don’t are if a guy wants to traipse around in an evening gown. Show up at my door with a machete or a baseball bat with harmful intent and the coroner will be removing that outfit.
I may be mistaken, but I recall reading other stories in which the cops were called but the clown(s) were gone before their arrival.
I’m really making a comparison of the way the mouth is done, with sharp corners, which is a no-no, and was the way the serial killer John Wayne Gacy did his mouth also. Sorry if you are offended.
I was always scared of clowns and still am.
They are like overly-forward people, but in hyperactive mode.
