Mysterious Clowns Terrorizing California City
ABC News ^ | Oct. 13, 2014 | Rheana Murray

It's like a scene from a horror film.

Residents of a California city are being terrorized by people dressed as clowns, some reportedly wielding machetes or baseball bats, police said.

"There's a natural phobia of clowns," Sgt. Joe Grubbs of the Bakersfield Police Department told ABC News today. "And, clearly, if someone is dressed up as a clown and holding a weapon in a threatening manner, that's going to frighten people."

There have been 20 sightings in a week, but only one clown has landed in cuffs. Bakersfield police arrested one juvenile last week for allegedly chasing other juveniles while in a clown costume. The 14-year-old suspect, who wasn't armed, told police he was participating in a hoax he had seen online.

Consider the number of cop/clown contacts so far (1) with the number of citizen/clown contacts (many)

I'm not sure how you can derive that. Are you equating contacts with arrests? There may have been lot's of cop/clown contacts, only one resulted in arrest. I read about this story days ago and the police reported that the clowns weren't breaking any laws or doing anything untoward.

Sounds like the one arrest that did occur was a kid who took it a little bit too far.

IMO this is more or less a bit of that "guerilla marketing" we've seen in the past. I wouldn't be surprised to see some sort of movie ad come out before this is all said and done.

Clowns have always creeped me out. When I was about 5 or 6 my parents took me to the Shrine Circus. We had a front row seat. A clown came along an offered me a bunch of paper flowers. When I took hold of the stems the blooms stayed in the clowns hand and I had a handfull of straws. It made me mad and I hit him in the face with my cotton candy. The cotton candy messed up his make up and stuck to his face. ha ha!
He stomped off, obviously mad at me.

< font size = 3 >With Halloween days away, this is nothing more than a poor attempt at publicity and attention directed toward people who enamored with that day. With harvest time over and the shortage employment, Wasco , a dot on the map near Bakersfield, otherwise has nothing to even draw residents back to their homes.

"There's a natural phobia of clowns," Sgt. Joe Grubbs of the Bakersfield Police Department told ABC News today.

Huh? When I was a kid clowns were part of a circus act and made you laugh. And then there was Bozo. I have have never associated clowns with scary or creepy.

I read somewhere that the "evil/scary clown" meme is a very recent phenomenon tied to contemporary anxieties and has no roots in the past.

All I know is that when I was a little bitty kid, the man on the left in this picture was my hero:

I absolutely adored him. I would put on old aprons, even old dresses, and pretend I was him. I think he's still alive. His real name is Bev Bergeron.

Maybe now people will believe me.

Clowns are evil.

I bet they wouldn’t pull that crap in Texas. There’d be a clown hunting season declared...

What if they're declared an endangered species?

Creepy clown video pranks seem to be the latest craze.

This video from Italy is the most popular one being passed around:

Just want to add: I’m glad the police are taking notice. Most of these clowns probably should be arrested because, in some of the videos, they appear to be holding real knives and chainsaws while chasing people.

Fear of clowns (coulrophobia) is pretty common. Studies have shown that almost all children dislike clowns, and many fear them.

I’ve always hated clowns, too. Even as a kid, I never found them to be anything more than annoying and weird.

Did you know that dogs taste better than cats?
Yep, they do! They have about 3 times more taste buds.
