Google has announced it is developing next generation quantum computer chip as part of its plan to enable machines to think like humans.
The internet company's Quantum Artificial Intelligence team, together with researcher John Martinis and his team at the University of California, will create the super-fast chip.
They will work on a hardware initiative to design and build chips operating on sub-atomic levels, making them exponentially faster than processors in ordinary computers.

But will it run Windows?
“to enable machines to think like humans. “
Wouldn’t that be a giant step backwards?
I’ll be first in with a SkyNet reference.
Don’t forget to put in Directive #4.
Depends upon which humans, one would think.
If they want to think like liberals, just unplug their computers and shazam, we’ve got a new liberal.
But I bet it still won’t download SP1...
Going to fail. Simulating human thought on a computer is not going to happen. Humans do not know how the mind works, so they can not model it on a chip.
Regardless. They will say they’ve done it and millions will believe it.
They will have to disqualify liberals. liberals have no human like thought. But if they do include liberal it will have to be classified non-human thought.
Ridiculous. We are eons away from brain reproduction , if it will ever be achieved.
Would a person from 1914 be able to reliably predict what technology would achieve by 2014?
I just got my computer from a guy named Howard Wilner. He mentioned this to me but wasnt sure when Google would be releasing it. Any eta on this?
1. A human being may not injure a robot or, through inaction, allow a robot to come to harm;
2. A human being must obey the orders given to it by a robot, except where such orders would conflict with the First Law;
3. A human being may protect its own existence as long as such protection does not conflict with the First or Second Law.
Nice and clean. I hope my skeleton makes for a nice exhibit in the Robot Museum of Antiquities.
Male or Female thought...this will have some bearing on how much RAM the sucker needs.
Google “purchased” a quantum based “computer” and they still don’t know it works or if it is “real”.
Making a machine think like “us” is not going to happen. Making a machine that can solve problems and design more of itself will lead to an intelligence explosion where we will not have the foggiest idea how a machine came to conclusions.
In other words, we will have created a new species of sorts whose “thoughts” or “thinking” is as different to us as ours is to an ant.
No matter how fast your computer is, Windows will slow it to a crawl.
There will be male and female computers. The male computers will only play porn and sports on the Internet. The female will deal with “feelings”.
*snigger*
“Flight 1203 to Los Angeles is today cancelled....the Airbus has a migraine and Approach control is watching the World series. “
Well, all it has to do is pass a touring test - which means that if you cant tell from an e-mail conversation that it isnt a human, it is intelligent. How hard could it be to program IBMs Watson to imitate Jesse Jackson?
Seriously, the article posits that the quantum computer is millions of times faster than a regular computer. If I have my numbers right, computers have been getting ten times faster every decade - so were talking six decades worth of Moores Law computer speed improvement. Maybe not an eon, but . . .
