A very scary report —
http://www.pakistantoday.com.pk/2014/12/01/national/suspected-ebola-patient-isolated-in-karachi/?
KARACHI-
A suspected patient of Ebola Virus Disease (EVD) was quarantined on Monday in Karachis Jinnah Hospital, private media reported,
The patient is reported to have recently arrived from Liberia, Africa.
According to provincial health authorities, blood samples have been obtained from the isolated patient to test for EVD.
Last week, a man was initially suspected of dying of EVD. However, World Health Organization later clarified that he was not suffering from the deadly disease but had died of Hepatitis C and Dengue fever.
Ebola virus causes an acute, serious illness which is often fatal if untreated.
It depends on how advanced his symptoms are. We learned from the late Mr. Duncan that the secretion and fomite hazards depend very much on their relative viral loads. If the victim is only a few days into the puking, coughing, sneezing and diarrhea phase, ordinary hospital cleanliness standards are adequate. A week later the victim is deadly from a distance unless you’re in full Biohazard-4 suits.
You seem to be right about the viral load, but who knows when the nurses were infected? That’s a function of load and protection, and a few particles can cause an infection. It seems true that patients are more infectious close to death, but your sweeping statement about normal procedures being OK before that is careless. No one knows where the threshold is.

None of the other people in Duncan’s apartment contracted Ebola, even from fomites after he left, and they were confined to the apartment. This is substantial evidence that his secretions for the first 5-6 days of his puking, coughing & diarrhea period were either not infectious, or that their ordinary cleanliness habits were effective enough at that stage. And standard hospital cleanliness standards are more rigorous than household standards.
So once the vomiting and puking starts, how long do we have to get the patient to the hospital? Is there a fixed number of days where it’s safe to be around them when they’re producing droplets? And do we get that hard data from the example of Mr. Duncan, or was he not typical?
Once they get to the hospital, the nurses can just ask the family when the aerosolizing started, and they will know how long they can skip through the tulips before they have to treat the BSL4 pathogen seriously. Sorry, but the answer to almost everything about ebola is ‘we don’t really know’. People should stop normalizing it.
This is definitely a continuum rather than a bright line issue, and it varies from individual to individual. IMO Duncan’s relatives were lucky, and he went to ER immediately after the onset of his symptoms.
