I have spent a little time compiling links to threads about the Ebola outbreak in the interest of having all the links in one thread for future reference.
Please add links to new threads and articles of interest as the situation develops.
Thank You all for you participation.
No kidding.
My mom and dad know someone who works 30/30 out of Lagos. Flies direct from the rig to MMA and then out again. It’s the trip through MMA that worries him after the Sawyer episode. Previously he’d been worried about boko haram.
I will say this. If boko haram damages Nigeria’s oil business in any definitive way, they’ll bomb them back before the stone age. Too many hands in the oil income pot to tolerate that.
Is there or is there not a confirmed case in Nairobi, linked to air transportation? (I’m on vacation and just getting the COCA+HAN updates by email).
HT Tilted Irish Kilt
I’ve heard rumors of Nairobi and France at this point.
This bodes ill for Europe in general if the Albanian cases are confirmed. Back to the question of 'Who was in contact with who?'
This is not looking good at all.
This is, pardon my French, ass-backwards. CDC in their latest guidance, says that "In West Africa [we are] assisting with exit screening and communication efforts to prevent sick travelers from getting on planes - no enhanced screening of arriving travelers at US airports, seaports, or land borders - working with Customs and Border Protection (CBP) at ports of entry to identify travelers who show signs of illness [and then] quarantine station staff evaluate ill travelers identified by CBP officers [and then] if an ill traveler is identified CDC will conduct investigation".
The Federal agents who are being told to "look out for Ebola" are the guys who check the passports. The guys who might recognize someone who is sick are the last ones into the game. You can just imagine what the "communication efforts" are in Sierra Leone aimed at preventing panicky, fleeing people from boarding aircraft away from the hot zone.
EVERY EPIDEMIC SIMULATION EVER DONE shows that the human impulse to run defeats all but the most stringent control measures. Does anyone believe, for a second, that WHEN CBP identifies a [black] person who looks ill getting off a plane from Heathrow or Schipol or CDG whose journey started in West Africa that they a) won't be afraid of being called "racist" and b) will immediately detain all the other passengers for quarantine?
Is there even a facility at JFK, IAD, or Logan that can intern 400 people for 22 days? Is there a Federal judge in NY, MA, or DC who will issue such an order?
Having run a few smallpox sims, I can tell you the answers are "no" and "no".
THE PLACE TO STOP EBOLA FLIGHTS IS ON THE GROUND BEFORE THEY TAKE OFF.

Roger that, I’ve heard the rumors, too. I was asking if you have any hard data.
No hard data, nope.
I will post anything as soon as I see it though.
Worse, there is some question of contagion before the onset of symptoms.
And one more thing: in simulations, the politicians always do the right thing AFTER it’s too late - for example, they won’t close the airports because “we can’t be sure”, once there are point source epidemics in Kenya, SA, France, etc, they then will close the airports and blame the epi professional staff for not insisting earlier.
Disturbing.
Her husband brought her to the hospital, in a taxi (probably didn’t want to tox his car, guess we can be thankful he didn’t take the bus with her?)
Hubby, taxi driver and the cab were bathed with bleach and allowed to GO!
If anyone thinks they’d keep them should this happen in our country need only look at the ‘voluntary’ 21d quarantine that was placed on Brantly’s family when they returned.
Which makes me wonder just how many cases will show up overseas before anyone will actually SAY there are cases there.
Would the European countries try to hide cases until they couldn’t?
“Theyve been kept in one ward and share the same toilet. What happens to WHO standard that says each patient should be separated from the other? If people know that the government is doing this I dont think anybody would want to come down here to quarantine them.”
If we had an outbreak here and people were quarantined ‘for their own good’, raise your hands if you think everyone would get their own isolation unit away from other quarantined individuals...If you’re quarantined in such a way ‘en masse’, if one has it the rest soon will too.

How dare South Korea act in their own best interests!

Recall that two nurses came in direct contact with Mr. Sawyer and one of them died this week the other nurse, Justina is still alive.
It would seem, though, that Justina is the nurse who escaped quarantine and fled with her husband.
What a mess.
No kidding.
This has the potential to spiral way out of control—even more than it already has.
What a mess indeedy.
I’ve heard rumors of over 100 in Nigeria with ebola but they’ve only ‘tested’ a few so have ‘cover’ with their official numbers.
Just rumors mind you.
Probably what was going on in Liberia and SL and Guinea as well. Didn’t want to scare off the foreign investments and workers.
If this gets to Nigeria’s oil exports there will be ripple effects worldwide.
That’s 100% mortality. For reasons I won’t go into.
