This may be one of the most frightening statements I have seen with regard to this outbreak. How many infected people have been released into the general population after testing negative?

Especially since it’s WHO that will be deciding who gets those 1000 vaccines.
I hadn’t seen this, but did see that the tests only pop positive if there is a massive viral load present.
The clinical attack rate of this thing is 95% or better.
The Canadians have shipped a vaccine. That’s pretty stellar news. Requires testing for both safety and efficacy, and nobody’s clear on how the vaccine works at this point, but they actually have, in hand, a vaccine candidate.
That’s a good thing.
Unless they plan on vaccinating the entire continent this is really only useful for medical workers at this point. With 1B people in AFrica, even at $50 a pop that’s $50B just for that one strain of one VHF. With every subsequent child born getting that same $50 vaccine. Fiscally unsustainable in a continent where most don’t even have clean drinking water.
A small molecule intervention (antiviral) that didn’t require special conditions (like a cold room or fridge) would be much more amenable for this particular type of infection.

But they have a vaccine. That’s a lot better than, “We’ll have a vaccine in 2015”
A vaccine in hand just means you have to deal with the logistics of making it and getting it out to uninfected people closest to the outbreaks to drive down the R0.
I agree it will be expensive, but the alternative is worse.
They’ll just print what they need to in order to get it done.
It’s good news.
