Come and get me, feral government goons!
Maybe that’s some of the basis for white privilege. Declare yourself white but because of a Spanish surname be eligible for affirmative action (discrimination against whites). Talk about having it both ways.
Hispanic is not a race.
Now that’s double dipping. Claiming white skin privilege and not giving up affirmative action status.
Think I’ll refer to myself as a Black Russian from now on.
This is controversial. Once, they were supposed to be part of the Mongoloid (Asian) race. I think there are some arguments that indigenous people constitute their own race or sub-raceS, depending on where they are. Latin America is huge, so there’s a lot of genetic diversity by location.
Spaniards are “White”. Many Hispanics claim to be descendants of the Canary Islanders. I’m not sure why.
Other than skewing crime statistics and welfare demographics, there isn’t much reason for most Hispanics in this country to identify themselves as white, unless, of course, they are primarily of Spaniard descent. The whole “white Hispanic” “non white Hispanic” thing is fodder for race-baiters. We don’t see the same confusion amongst black Hispanics or Polynesian Hispanics.
I would prefer “American”, but it’s not an option.
Maybe they should provide color charts to match up skin tone for government data.
The government does that on many forms. Primary race: “Hispanic”, secondary race; “white”. I used to fill out forms for them.
As usual, the NYT needs to buy a clue-”Hispanic” is not a race, it is just an ethnic group, and includes all three races-but most of us are Caucasian-so they can stop handing out race cards to people who were Americans when the southwest was new Spain...
If we are to categorize Hispanics as a race, like Anglo-Saxons, then fine....Hispanics are white....Yes I know it’s hard to swallow for the folks who are of paler shades of white (and all “minorities”), but it’s true.
The indians, mulattos, and mestizos that we’ve all been brainwashed to believe are of the Hispanic Race—aren’t.
It’s really simple. Those who trace their ancestry to the Spanish Iberian Peninsula (or shall I say, the ancient Roman Province of....wait for it....”Hispania”) are Hispanic. Those who don’t, aren’t.
Penelope Cruz = Hispanic
David Ortiz = Not Hispanic
My nephew married a woman from Peru. She calls herself a “Latina’. However, I am certain she would ID herself as white on a census - since she is every bit as white as other Americans who are descended from Europeans.
On my fathers side: Scottish and German
On my mothers side: Spanish and Mexican
I have never known what to put. Mostly I put down white because that is what I have always identified with.
What the heck are you supposed to put down if you are a mix?
This problem is why we shouldn’t be asking this question.
I am an American. That should be good enough.
Actually if you are Hispanic you are white. Hispanics are from the Iberian Peninsula which is part of Europe. Latins? If the ORIGINAL Latins (Romans) are white then all real Latins are white (Italians, French, Romanians, Spaniards, etc.). BTW, I never figured out why South Americans are considered Latin but not Italians.
One day, he had to call an Indian guy into his office for an embarrassing conversation. He needed the guy to change his "white" description of himself on some government bean counting form because he was messing up the department's diversity numbers!
He's now in the "Asian" column.
I have a Basque surname and that’s almost Hispanic, right?
