Hispanics are often described as driving up the nonwhite share of the population. But a new study of census forms finds that more Hispanics are identifying as white.
An estimated net 1.2 million Americans of the 35 million Americans identified in 2000 as of Hispanic, Latino or Spanish origin, as the census form puts it, changed their race from some other race to white between the 2000 and 2010 censuses, according to research presented at an annual meeting of the Population Association of America and reported by Pew Research.
The researchers, who have not yet published their findings, compared individual census forms from the 2000 and 2010 censuses. They found that millions of Americans answered the census questions about race and ethnicity differently in 2000 and 2010. The largest shifts were among Americans of Hispanic origin, who are the nations fastest growing ethnic group by total numbers.

Aren’t a lot of Hispanics part indigenous or part African? You can be “Hispanic” from the Dominican Republic or Cuba and be very African-appearing.
On the other hand, there are a lot of Spanish speakers from places like Brazil and Argentina who do not have any Spanish or Portuguese ancestry. They are Italian or Polish or German or Middle Eastern or something. (Like Carlos Slim of Mexico, and Pope Francis). They could easily put “caucasian” or “white”, even if they were born and raised in Latin America.
In our local area, we have a growing number of upper-middle class Brazilians. I don’t picture them caring to identify as “Hispanic”. They don’t need anybody’s charity.
Or *maybe* after 10 years, those who changed the designation have become more assimilated.
I was always white in Texas and California and the South and border states, but when I moved to the pure white, uppper Midwest, the first question I would often hear was, which Indian tribe was I part of.
I would prefer “American”, but it’s not an option.
I get that sometimes too due to my Italian background. I just play their game and invent some BS tribe and put in some “I sit all day smoking pot while my family counts the money from our casino” nonsense for extra...
Maybe they should provide color charts to match up skin tone for government data.
The government does that on many forms. Primary race: “Hispanic”, secondary race; “white”. I used to fill out forms for them.
As usual, the NYT needs to buy a clue-”Hispanic” is not a race, it is just an ethnic group, and includes all three races-but most of us are Caucasian-so they can stop handing out race cards to people who were Americans when the southwest was new Spain...
The easiest way out was on a school transfer, and checking "Caucasian" at that point.
Not all hispanics want to be held back with special favors, and a lot don't like competing with invader labor. That's the impression I got.
A guy I know who is a white skinned Mexican-American was once asked by a German in Germany, “Do you have any feathers?” I assume he meant a headdress.
It is true that many European-Spanish ancestry people who have been classed as Hispanic would want to identify as white. They are, after all, pretty much Caucasian.
But a lot of the illegal immigrants classed as Hispanic are indigenous people much like our American Indians.
It is logical that those who come from Cuba and Brazil would want to identify with their Spanish Caucasian or “white” identity to separate themselves from the indigenous Indians.
Exactly—and that’s just their thinking too!
“Hispanic” an ethnic group? I don’t think that all the Spanish speakers from Latin America are all of one ethnicity, nor do they share ethnicity with Spaniards from Spain.
For me it seems that it is Cherokee or Choctaw on my mothers side.
If “Latin” refers to the original Latins-Romans-then that includes people of Italian and French ancestry, as well as Spanish-and all have varying shades of olive skins, from pale to dark...
Typically, not. "Hispanic" can mean a pure European from Spain, a mostly black Portuguese-speaking Brazilian, a pure South American Indian speaking some native tongue, etc.
Generally, most of those identifying as "Hispanic" are mestizo : a mix of European and Native American.
If we are to categorize Hispanics as a race, like Anglo-Saxons, then fine....Hispanics are white....Yes I know it’s hard to swallow for the folks who are of paler shades of white (and all “minorities”), but it’s true.
The indians, mulattos, and mestizos that we’ve all been brainwashed to believe are of the Hispanic Race—aren’t.
It’s really simple. Those who trace their ancestry to the Spanish Iberian Peninsula (or shall I say, the ancient Roman Province of....wait for it....”Hispania”) are Hispanic. Those who don’t, aren’t.
Penelope Cruz = Hispanic
David Ortiz = Not Hispanic
