Skills Every Man Should Know?

Posted on 05/02/2014 8:59:22 PM PDT by MNDude

Today a young guy at the office got a flat tire. A bunch of young guys gathered around in the parking lot and I was amazed how none knew how to change a flat.

I commented this had to be one of the top things all men should know.

What would be some of the things you would include on a list that all men should know how to do? (Like change oil, etc)

Never to date anyone with more psychological issues than you yourself have.

Once, after having left Beatty NV on US 95 with a colleague, we came on a middle aged lady and her wheelchair bound mother with a flat tire. US 95 is pretty sparse in the way of people/places/buildings there.

Spent about a half hour getting her tire changed and drove off (my colleague supervised me the whole time). Trunk was completely filled with stuff.

Later, after stopping down the road in Indian Springs to get something to drink, the lady pulled up and then tried to give me some money. I told her to just pass it on when the need came up.

The definitive “know how” list is in the book “Time Enough for Love” by the character Lazarus Long [R.A. Heinlein]

While, of course, conservatives have the reverse reaction.

The Marine Corp gave my son two sewing kits, and they expect him to know how to use them. Men should know how to sew, wash and iron their clothes.

Apparently no one actually knows how to change a tire. There is a commercial wherein a dad has his daughter change her tire. Then they hug, seemingly all choked up at the beauty of it all...except that anyone copying the little they actually show of the procedure is likely to have the car fall off the jack.

Had the occasion to help a guy stuck by the side of the road with an S belt just this week. It was a Cummins diesel and honestly I don’t know how you do them alone. PITA.

There are already to many half a$$ welders!

I welded a steering knuckle back on to a JK with two batteries some rod and jumper cables in the outback - that held forty miles back to town on dirt roads. Not some pansy MIG weld in a clean shop!;-)

For those interested ...

The Robert Heinlein quote “A human being should be able to change a diaper, ...” is found in his book “Time Enough For Love” in the first of two chapters titled “Intermission: Excerpts from the notebooks of Lazarus Long.”

Both chapters are collections of sayings from a man who is hundreds of years old. Stuff like “Rub her feet” and “Your enemy is never a villain in his own eyes ...” and “Always place clothes and weapons where you can find them in the dark.” Great stuff. The story itself is pretty good, too.
