CT scans and the use of infra-red technology on the naturally mummified remains of a woman who lived in in a Christian community in the Sudan 1,300 years ago have revealed a tattoo on her inner thigh. The tattoo is a symbol of the Archangel Michael, assembled from ancient Greek letters. “She is the first evidence of a tattoo from the period. This is a very rare find,” Daniel Antoin, curator of physical anthropology at the British Museum, told The Telegraph. The woman’s remains are part of a special exhibition of eight mummies and what technology has revealed about their lives.

Interesting. I wouldn’t have thought tattoing was done in the Sudan - I would have thought scarification only would show.
Actually kind of repelled by most comments. She was Christian and it was a Christian symbol and I am a Christian.
maybe, but maybe not in a tramp-stamp way. St. Michael does a lot of things. He guards Eve's body, protects the Nile River, saves souls out from under Satan's nose. A knight in shining armour against evil and Satan. He's a healer, too, and so a protector of women.
Given the tatoo's location, which midwives would certainly observe on a regular basis, the tatoo could been a talisman of protection against death during childbirth, or maybe even a strong visual warning against sexual violation.

I’m not sure about some of these comments either. My understanding was that tattooing was originally for healing, sometimes a simple cross tattooed with ink made from a particular wood’s ash and placed over an area experiencing pain, like on a shoulder or something. I was surprised a bit by this one though because the Christian faith I’m from doesn’t allow tattoos, or at least didn’t used to.
Is Sudan in Egypt again?
They share the Lake Nasser waters (such as they are) and perhaps electrical power from the dam, but I’m not sure about the latter; when the Aswan High Dam went into use, the dynamos provided a huge percentage of Egypt’s electricity, but thanks to dropping water level and (mostly) the massive change in population and per capita use, it’s down below 10% somewhere.
