The Weekly Gardening Thread is a weekly gathering of folks that love soil, seeds and plants of all kinds. From complete newbies that are looking to start that first potted plant, to gardeners with some acreage, to Master Gardener level and beyond, we would love to hear from you. This thread is non-political, although you will find that most here are conservative folks.
No matter what, you wont be flamed and the only dumb question is the one that isnt asked. It is impossible to hijack the Weekly Gardening Thread. There is no telling where it will go and... that is part of the fun and interest. Jump in and join us!
NOTE: This is a once a week ping list. We do post to the thread during the week. Links to related articles and discussions which might be of interest are welcomed, so feel free to post them at any time.
— I wonder why a place to do hair is called a beauty shop—
Because that’s where the beauties go for a tune up.
My wife does my hair, I save $10 each time she cuts it. Last time she put the wrong attachment on the clippers and went from my forehead to the middle and stopped. “Oh my, honey, I have made a big mistake, I buzzed you instead of clipping” I told her to keep going, no biggie, it grows back. LOL Mine grows super fast anyway. Now she likes it super short; my cap rides better, too. As long as I don’t need to own a comb, I’m happy.
Just this morning, those Tromboncino seeds you sent me the first time, that I put in Miracle Gro Seed Starter on 2-24 are up. I haven't checked the ones I started this past Monday from the whole unopened envelope. Okay, I just went and checked, and the ones I planted Monday, 3-10 aren't up yet.Do you think the T squash could make a fast growing privacy fence?
There’s a good chance that a horse ranch near my land will be for sale soon. I won’t say how close it is to my land. But, if any FReepers are thinking of buying a farm, please, please, please buy it! I’ll post information as soon as it’s announced.
For the last 8 years or so this ranch has been owned by a string of nasties, the latest has a warrant out for his arrest for animal cruelty. These are beautiful horses, they deserve better than to go hungry as often as they do.
Awesome info! Thanks so much!
Thanks so much! I saved it as a jpeg on my desktop for easy reference.
A friend gave me some heirloom tomato plants back in 2000. I saved the seeds and grew plants the next year and he gave me some plants of new varieties. After a couple of years of this he would do all the plants and I would grow them and save seeds. This year because I decided to get an early start I pulled out some refrigerated seed from 2005 & 2006. Almost all of them sprouted and are getting their second leaves. I will transplant them Tuesday or Wednesday.
Hmm. If the T squash is left to go on the ground, it will cover a hell of a lot of space and you would lose that ground for planting other plants, plus the squash will grow curved in a circle. If you let it grow upward (the barrel I have this one in has a plastic trellis around it), the squash attaches itself rock solid on that trellis as it grows upward. It reached the 5 ft. top of the trellis then started down the trellis on the outside of the trellis and reached an overall length of at least 10 feet which is not unusual. Growing that way, the squash of 12-14 inches long, is straight, not curved. Remember, it can be a summer squash or left on the vine to become a winter squash like a butternut.
Now, I'm going to have some in large pots with no trellis built into them, so I have, from Lowes, 5 ft. tall metal (covered with a plastic green covering) stakes, and I have soft plastic - looks like Styrofoam - “rope” with wire in it, to cut and secure the stalk to the stake.
The strands the stalk puts out to wrap around whatever, have brains because they will seek out whatever is around them to attach to. I had to untangle a few that reached out and latched on to a chair leg and reached out a long way to attach to another plant. I tell you this to say wherever you put them, they will grow on it by latching on and the plant is not moving after it does that.
I you put a bunch of them close together on stakes or on a fence or anything else, they will entwine but don't think you are moving them after that. It puts out so many latching threads it is unbelievable.
They grow so fast I know you could sit out at night and watch them grow inches in one night. Unless the one I had was magic, they all grow like that. The other thing you could do is turn the stalk after it grows as high straight up as you want, so it grows sideways on a fence or anything solid enough to hold it sideways as it grows and latches on.
The problem with a privacy fence of them is, they will die at the first freeze. Look again at them growing on a side and overhead trellis (give the picture time to load and I don't want to hear any off color comments about their shape.) :o)

The picture never loaded for me, but while I was waiting for it to not load, I thought of this place:

Haruumph, they’re not going to open until April 26th..It will probably be hot by then. I want you to go ,and give us a full report.
sock — I have sent the T picture to you by regular email. Let me know if you can see that one.
To both of you, it has rained all day. Got in beauty shop without having to use umbrella but took it in with me and had to use it to get to car afterward. It was still lightly raining when I had to go out and cover plants with row cover due to the freaking squirrels and birds might get my beautiful plants in the early morning.
rightly, have you stayed in house all day out of the rain?
Thanks, sockmonkey.
We had never heard of this place. My wife wants to go see it, and if they have any daylillies, she will buy them out. Me, I want that Japanese Red Maple. I have looked at some at the place south of Houston where we bought our veggie starts, but I cringe at paying that much for ONE tree that may or may not survive or be attractive. But this one is nice!
Clicked on the link and saw Hope Farms Gardens. If you were with me, I’d walk their garden but I’m not doing it by myself. You see, you would be comic relief but otherwise, I can’t comment about what I see so I don’t care to see it especially if it is really hot and maybe it wouldn’t be too hot in April.
I’d get some herbs and ginger and hopefully those would be in a place close to the front to buy.
Right now, pine tree pollen has started as I saw the first “yellow” on my windshield when I went to beauty shop. Since it was raining, it washed that pollen off. In a couple of days, I’ll have to wash off windshield before I can drive, due to it being solid yellow with pollen.
rightly, are you allergic to that pollen? My beauty operator already has a stuffed up head and sore throat from it. So, trees have started their thing and I’m allergic to them so I stay in but I can’t with this garden stuff so will dig out a face mask to use.
If rightly and wife goes, I’ll go with them.
I rode into town this morning before it started raining to pick up meds from HEB, but not been even close to going outside since. So much for planting today.
I have a fresh stack of magazines to keep me busy for a while, probably 75 of them.
—rightly, are you allergic to that pollen?—
To take in pollen, one must first be able to breathe.
My wife can look at pollen and get allergic reactions.
When we got out this morning, there was no pollen on the car. The rain will wash the air and wash it off the trees for a day or two till they make some more.
The traffic going over to 105 to beauty shop, was thick.
Guess it's because it's Saturday. I usually don't go out anywhere on Saturday due to the crowds.
This fabric is nowhere near used up. I will use it to cover my container beds and use it for year 4. JustADumbBlonde recommended it a few years ago, as being good product and long lasting at a bargain price. If she had put each piece back in the same place, it would not have any extra holes in it. It will serve me just fine, I think.
We are not sure where your unit is, but we know where the entrance is. That should count for something?
It is the entrance people can’t find so if you know where that is, you are in good shape and I’m glad you have found it. There is a box out there before the mail boxes and a code has to be put in there in order to get the gate to open. I’ll tell you what that is when you need to come there.
