Free Republic | Feb 28, 2014 | greeneyes

Posted on 02/28/2014 12:35:18 PM PST by greeneyes

The Weekly Gardening Thread is a weekly gathering of folks that love soil, seeds and plants of all kinds. From complete newbies that are looking to start that first potted plant, to gardeners with some acreage, to Master Gardener level and beyond, we would love to hear from you. This thread is non-political, although you will find that most here are conservative folks.

No matter what, you won’t be flamed and the only dumb question is the one that isn’t asked. It is impossible to hijack the Weekly Gardening Thread. There is no telling where it will go and... that is part of the fun and interest. Jump in and join us!

NOTE: This is a once a week ping list. We do post to the thread during the week. Links to related articles and discussions which might be of interest are welcomed, so feel free to post them at any time.

Between you and my doctor friend, I would be in good hands.

Forecast still says 32 tonight, so didn’t take covers off plants. I dread seeing them tomorrow.

My smart pots covered with plankets had cats on them all day. I'm sure tomorrow, they will be fine.

We had a light drizzle. It wasn’t much at all.

Ain’t it the truth?!LOL! I think I’ll just start a few seeds when I get my “round tuit” and in the meantime I’ll fight off the Krud which is infesting my respiratory tract, and figure that somehow or another, it’ll all be ok! LOL!

My birds go in their coop at night, and the ducks have a separate coop. Both have a lot of wire to keep them secure. During the day, we let them free range over 5 acres. We lost a couple ducks two nights ago because they decided to nest in a copse of juniper and we didn’t account for them. A raccoon got them.

LOL! I ran into that last year! I was so eager to try to be a good jump-on-the-season gardener that I actually killed off my first round of seedlings because they got too leggy before they were able to get their toes into the ground. If somehow I am unable to get my seedlings going this year, I am just going to be resigned to going to the garden store and buy one or two of THEIR plants!

Darlin gets frantic when I put the seedling tray next to the food prep area. Can’t understand that....it’s just good clean dirt, ain’t it????

Well, we can hope!

I think someone turned Algore loose and the Snow King and Snow Queen are having their revenge...

I was outside with the guy I hired to clean up the debris from the ice storm, and I got brave and uncovered one of my Meyers lemons. It looked to be in good shape. :)

We’ve got a debris pile as big as a full size van.

I uncovered all plants and they are okay except the four cucumbers are flat but they weren’t good before the ice. I had already planted more of those seeds a few days ago and they are under the grow lamp (but they are in Jiffy seed starter - more about that down this post). The Walking Onions look no different than they did before the ice and I didn’t cover them. Those things must be made of plastic to not flinch when it’s freezing and they are iced over.

I am very disturbed about this Jiffy Seed Starter - not a single seed has sprouted in any cup (9 cups) with this stuff in it. That includes Tromboncino Squash and Deck Corn and other important seeds. The ones in Espoma I have used before and ran out using it this time, have all come up including the Deck Corn in one. I have another bag of Jiffy Seed starter but Jiffy is the pits it seems. I have looked on Home Depot, Lowes, and Walmart websites and none of them have this Espoma. I’m going to have to order it from Amazon and get it here as quickly as possible.

There is something wrong if everything in Espoma is up and none in Jiffy is up.

I pre-watered some Jiffy last night and this morning planted three cups with each having three Deck Corn seeds in them. Have no idea if these will come up but thought I should try it with pre-watered Jiffy.

The “T” squash comes up fast so I’ll wait until I get Espoma to replant those seeds.

Your darling would freak in my kitchen. I have a long greenhouse heating pad. The best place for it is on my kitchen counter. So, I have five flats of that good clean soil in my food space. Perhaps this is another reason that I have such a robust immune system.
happy gardening!
