The Weekly Gardening Thread is a weekly gathering of folks that love soil, seeds and plants of all kinds. From complete newbies that are looking to start that first potted plant, to gardeners with some acreage, to Master Gardener level and beyond, we would love to hear from you. This thread is non-political, although you will find that most here are conservative folks. No matter what, you won’t be flamed and the only dumb question is the one that isn’t asked. It is impossible to hijack the Weekly Gardening Thread. There is no telling where it will go and... that is part of the fun and interest. Jump in and join us!

NOTE: This is a once a week ping list. We do post to the thread during the week. Links to related articles and discussions which might be of interest are welcomed, so feel free to post them at any time.

Pinging the list.

We have warmed up to 28 degrees in our little Acre of the Show Me State. Still freezing, but not bitter freeze. Going on the 20th day of school closings or more.

Hard to convince myself that I need to plant anything. I think we’ll probably have a late spring maybe even some snow in April.

I am going to plant some lettuce and spinach and peppers for indoor snacking towards March. I have 3 ping pong size lemons on the indoor plant, and it is getting ready to bloom again lots of buds all over. The scent will be heavenly for a few weeks once they start blooming.

Have a great weekend, stay safe, and stay warm. God Bless.

Freezing here in central Texas, but we’ve been eating fresh turnips and broccoli for several weeks. It hasn’t gotten out of the 30s for three days.

Cold here in Cincinnati. Got down to 1 degree last night, warms up to 20 today and then down to 2 again tonight. We won't see 25 degrees for a week.

Which leads me to ask a gardening question.

My dad used to say extended cold streaks would kill insect eggs. Any proof of this? Can we expect less insects this year?

I didn’t save any seeds this year because I was busy with baby. I started over with Baker Creek seeds. I love their catalogue, and I hope I love their product as well.

It's been in the 20s all week here. I've been inside. Lots of stuff in the sun window is sprouting and making me wish spring were here.

It may warm up tomorrow, but it looks like we've got another nasty week of winter ahead of us.

We’re at 32 in the Texas Hill Country but tomorrow is supposed to be around 70 this weekend. Dug around and found some old insulated curtains and pinned them up because the bedrooms aren’t getting above 62. I bought those old things before we were married and they’ve been cut and resewn and off with the kids to college and to granny’s and back again. And people wonder why I don’t throw stuff away.

We’ve had the crud all week so I dug up a ginger root for hot tea and that’s helped tremendously.

I just about finished up another round of seeds inside but ran out of starting soil before getting the peppers potted up. I had wanted to combine the last with some potting soil but Mother Nature is still getting her jollies by putting some sort of fungus/mold on the top of the huge bag of potting soil that I’d only used enough last summer for one hanging basket.

The cabbage is very slow to germinate. It’s been 3 weeks so half may have to be reseeded. The tomatoes, broccoli, cauliflower and brussels sprouts, etc. are doing fine with only a pot or two here and there needing reseeded. But they’re not getting any sun on these cold dreary days.

Still saving gallon milk jugs in hopes of the tomatoes needing a bigger home before they go out in April.

We’re at a two day high of 36 here. Grey and nasty. I went out earlier to water the pups, and it was misting a rain so fine that I couldn’t see it.

We have a few volunteer green onions coming up, about 6in tall from last year. Maybe they will be better this year.

My seeds, well, I dont have any sprouting, but one, a Boxcar Willie tomato. I suppose that is my fault for breaking my established routine. If I get no more sprouts, I will just buy more starts at the garden center when we go in about three weeks. Maybe I need the room in the garden to try some other things this year.

Tomatoes, peppers and a couple others have survived their first transplanting. Our little seed starter (from Lowes, about $40) plus grow lights and heating pads are KICKIN !

We have so much stuff started that we're beginning to think we might need a second seed starter unit. Everything is toasty, warm and humid inside this little gizmo.

Congratulations on you successful marriage. I love to hear success stories like that.

My folks made it 62 years and didn’t marry till they were about 25 yo.

OMG! We had SNOW in San Antonio. I actually stepped in a snowdrift. It was horrendous...winds were blowing, snow was flowing, and it was c-o-l-d: cold.

Got my seedlings under the fluorescent lamp and a few more unsprouted pods on top of the water heater. Been cold here too in DFW and gotta have those seedlings in their ‘incubator’ for a backyard gardener like me to get a head start this year. My cilantro and mustard tendergreens are covered up out back under the tree ring waiting to be liberated when the warmer weather shows up.
Appreciate all you fellow GT FReeps and the info shared.

Good Evening All:
I was on the Country Woman website today and saw a great idea. Using used K-cups as a seed starter. Dump out the coffee grounds, fill with soil mix, seed. Hole that is already in the bottom of cups provides drainage.

Has anyone heard from Marcella today? She usually posts a lot on the gardening thread.

Marcella, I hope you're doing well in this bad weather.

Sorry I haven’t been around much lately, my work schedule is taking up most of my time. I do read FR at work but I’m not allowed to actually log in from there.

The first time I ordered seeds from the government seed bank, they sent them to me without a fuss. This time they wanted me to prove I was really doing research with them and not just growing them for fun. Well, I think research is fun, but I did explain to them how I’m testing things for resiliance and trying to breed sturdier, hardier plants. They agreed to send me some of the seeds I requested.

As for the rest of the seeds, I discovered that http://www.etsy.com has a seeds section! Lots of new seeds to try there that aren’t in any catalog :)

I’m trying to plan out my garden for this year. I still have squash from last year, and it’s still rock solid. The problem is, as much as I love growing squash, I’m not so fond of eating it! I have some recipes that are tolerable, but I’m still looking for a really good one. I might get some wonton wrappers and try squash dumplings. I can’t roll out dough or I’d make it from scratch.

Sorry if I’m rambling and mistyping stuff, my nighttime meds are starting to kick in. That reminds me, I still need to find skullcap seeds! Best remedy fr twitchy muscles that I’ve found, eve if it does turn me into a pumpkin every night :p

I saw this dragonfruit at the Asian supermarket and thought I'd try growing some from seed like I saw on YouTube. Thus commences The Pitaya (Dragonfruit) Experiment.

On the left is the dragonfruit. Middle picture is sliced, and then I scraped some of the seeds and put them on a napkin and let them dry out for a bit, cut the napkin so there are 3 seeds on each piece and then put them on top of potting mix and dusted about 1/8 inch of seed starting soil.
