...cracked Peyton Manning's hand signal code during the Super Bowl so they were able to predict every play

The Seattle Seahawks have revealed that a good part of their defensive strategy at the Super Bowl came from the fact that they were able to decode Peyton Manning's hand signals on the field. Controversial corner back Richard Sherman said that he and his fellow defenders cracked the code that the Denver Broncos quarterback was using, meaning that they knew exactly what to expect for each play. 'We knew what route concepts they liked on different downs, so we jumped all the routes. Then we figured out the hand signals for a few of the route audibles in the first half,' he said.

Jeeze. I hate when I hot-edit a sentence and render it unintelligible. Try this for the first paragraph. Ugh.

I’ll disagree. It’s no secret that Peyton will be the most coveted on-air, ex-NFL talent since Theisman. He’s already proven his on-camera ease with all of his commercial appearances. If he’s not part of the in-studio pregame team at whichever network “wins” him, he’ll be the primary color-guy for A team right away.

"...and save the trickery for situations where it could make a difference..."

Ahh... so there was no use for it since they never got to a situation where it would make a difference :-) I did hear him, during the week leading up to the SB, having a little fun with the reporters about it. But that got play because it was the most recognized call, there were certainly others. And he did voice play changes alot amongst the linemen because they obviously can't watch for hand signals.

But in this case, getting away from Omaha (and other actual audible calls) in favor of hand signals, was this a case of perhaps overthinking and confusing his own players or allowing his team the opportunity to miss his hand-signaled "audibles"? The old school in me says you dance wit' who brung ya'. Just a thought...

So Sherman says they cracked the code rather than totally dominated them? If I was a team mate I don't think I would like this dude

Why not? First they totally destroy Manning on the field, then Sherman messes with his mind. I think it establishes physical and intellectual domination. Keep in mind, that safety flub at the beginning of the game wasn't caused by stolen symbols.

I'm really, really liking Sherman's attitude.

Richard should be getting a lot of calls from San Diego and Kansas City.

Perhaps Manning considered it a football game and was not looking for underhanded tricks. It's a game, right.

Why admit this? LOL It makes their win/defense seem much less impressive.

Yeah, because if the enemy fails to conceal their plan adequately you should avert your eyes. =P

I’m not a Bronco’s or Seahawk’s fan but I told my son that it seemed the Seahawks knew exactly which play Peyton Manning called as if they owned the signals and the play book. He thought I was crazy. I’ve just been vindicated.

No wonder Richard Sherman has been showing so much respect for Peyton Manning. He knows what the Seahawks did to him.

You mean imaginary? Quite possibly.

Baseball teams do this. They study the pitcher, to see if he ‘tips’ his pitches. Good pitchers know not to give any hint of what they are throwing.

I really see Peyton as an NFL announcer/color analyst for 20+ years once he retires. I just hope he doesn't go to ESPN unless his addition causes the retirement of Chris Berman.

jeez, no kidding.

“I figured out the Seahawks’ hand signals after the very first play of the game and after the very first play of the 2nd half — applause.”

Outstanding humor !!

Sherman is a student scholar, 2nd in his HS graduating class, completed degree at Stanford.

I think he’s telling the fans there is more to football than just physical ability. He said “we.....figured out the hand signs” but not when, or who.

The deep backs pretty much took the long passes away, forcing Manning to pass short, racking up a Super Bowl record for completed passes, but scoring almost nothing.

Payton is the last of his breed. It’s the end of the pocket QB. Defense coordinators have figured them out. Payton and Eli are finished. The era of the pass and run QB begins.

Pocket passers are not finished because of pass & run quarterbacks. Pass and run quarterbacks are becoming more common because of a dearth of good pocket passers.
