Interesting. When I was a visiting professor in Turkey, I took a guided tour of the country during a school holiday. I'm now disappointed that the tour agency never included this site on the tour.

” `My name is Ozymandias, King of Kings:
Look on my works, ye mighty, and despair!’
Nothing beside remains. Round the decay
Of that colossal wreck, boundless and bare,
The lone and level sands stretch far away.”

Until recently that area was a no go zone especially during the Cold War as it site right on the border with Armenia which was part of the former Soviet Union.

Besides this, Turkey has wonderful New Testament Biblical ruins: Ephesus, The 7 cities of Revelation 2-3, Galatia, Colossae (unexcavated), Antioch, Miletus (Acts 17), Derbe, Lystra, and more.

Outstanding defensive location for a city. Unfortunately, Ani was in a very rough neighborhood visited by Byzantines, Turks, Mongols and Persians.
