As parts of the United States prepare for record-breaking cold temperatures, a YouTube video showing an alternative way to heat your home might come in handy.
The video, which we first found on Why Don't You Try This, was made by journalist and boat-owner Dylan Winter. All you need to make this do-it-yourself heater are tea lights, a loaf tin, and two clay flower pots.
You can find tea light candles at pretty much any drug or hardware store. A pack of 50 is only $5.99 at CVS, for instance.
In the video, Winter places four tea lights into a loaf tin and covers them with a small flower pot that's turned upside down. He then covers the drain hole on the bottom of the small pot with the metal casing from one of the tea lights. The small pot is covered by a bigger flower pot and the hole is not covered.

I need to experiment and see how this would work by placing the pots over a rocket stove.

The tea light and flower pot industries did not anticipate the run on their products you just created. Price will soon be up to $.50 per hour.

I bought a bunch of kerosene lanterns at garage sales, etc. Provides good light and a little bit of heat. Years ago the power went out. I was working on my laptop off of a marine battery under the kerosene lamp. Sent off my report over the dial up on the phone line. Boy - talk about pioneer days!

This doesnt produce carbon monoxide?I don't know. I have read that rooms heated with candles become oxygen-depleted, so stick your head out the window every once in awhile and get a breath of fresh air.

I have some old timey oil lamps we use in a pinch - they put out more light than candles. My dad has told me that the one sure way to get a spanking from his dad when he was a kid was to run in the house when the oil lamps were lit (1920’s-30’s time period).

With a rocket mass heater, you run the insulated chimney up inside an inverted 55 gal metal barrel then an exhaust pipe back down around the base. You exhaust the gases out through a mass of bricks, gravel, adobe, etc which absorbs the heat, then finally run the exhaust outside.

I am SO DONE with candles after our week-long power outage last winter. ....Could barely see to make coffee, although I had a whole slew of them. Sure couldnt read by them.In a pinch, it's good to set up mirrors behind them. Double the light.

You have to be smarter than a flower pot to use it. It doesnt have to be on the floor, either. People with common sense can surely use this.I was kind of horrified that he set the metal pan on a flammable magazine with flammable inks on the pages. Loony. I think I would have set it on a trivet.

The ones the man had burned for 4 hours. He is in England or thereabouts and their tea lights may not be the same as ours.

It was -25 below in Maine last week. The frinkin’ furnace, going full bore, barely kept the house warm. A couple of tea lights wouldn’ do a thing.

Its not going to do the whole house, but it actually will help warm up a small room.

I wonder how many people will use those orange plastic flower pots that are made to look like the red clay ones.

“But wouldnt a light bulb (the old, illegal, incandescent kind) under a flower pot do the same thing and be less of a fire hazard?”
If your power worked, plug in a heater. We are talking about power being off and a way to have heating.

I just figure it is natural since it is found on public media that it utilizes some form of “pot.”

Now THAT looks downright toasty!
Woke up about a year ago at 2:30am, hearing muffled voices and shouting.
I groggily jumped out bed, pulled back the drapes and there was my neighbor's house (3 doors away) with the upper floor fully engulfed.
Twenty five foot flames shot out of the bedrooms windows like they were propelled out of a huge flame thrower.
Took the fireman three hours to put it out and damage was so bad, my neighbor just moved back in last month.
Cause of fire ... candle that his teen daughter had forgotten to put out. Fortunately, no casualties.
