The Weekly Gardening Thread is a weekly gathering of folks that love soil, seeds and plants of all kinds. From complete newbies that are looking to start that first potted plant, to gardeners with some acreage, to Master Gardener level and beyond, we would love to hear from you. This thread is non-political, although you will find that most here are conservative folks. No matter what, you wont be flamed and the only dumb question is the one that isnt asked. It is impossible to hijack the Weekly Gardening Thread. There is no telling where it will go and... that is part of the fun and interest. Jump in and join us!
NOTE: This is a once a week ping list. We do post to the thread during the week. Links to related articles and discussions which might be of interest are welcomed, so feel free to post them at any time.
My expierince with Amaryllis is that they bloom once a year. They are a bulb,so they usually double the next year.
Those lettuce seed packets all have way more than we can use. I have plenty leftover to use this year.
I usually plant a bunch over several weeks in the fall outside, and cover it up for the winter, and on warmer sunshiny days uncover it, harvest a batch and let it soak up the sun before covering it up again. That usually lasts until around May or June before I have to plant additional seeds.
In addition, I have the indoor supply to use for lettuce on sandwiches.
I just didn’t quite get around to doing all the stuff on the same scale as usual this year.
You are welcome. Keep us posted on your progress please.
Starting the seeds on March 1, should make the plants ready to put out by March 17 or so. I do not expect frost after that at all but I could cover them if necessary.
The seeds I have planted now require eight weeks before they can go outside so that makes them ready by March. They will spend some days outside in the greenhouse, then be put out of the greenhouse with net over them to keep the killers away from them.
I had two types of onion that need eight weeks so I thought they all did and screwed up by planning two types that don’t need that long. I’ll figure out what to do about that when they are bigger. All the four onion types are up now.
“When mesquite trees bud, you should be good.”
I think you mean Redbud trees.
Where do you live?
In many areas amaryllis is very happy outdoors year round. It will go dormant in the winter, but then bloom in the early summer. Many bulbs need to go dormant in between bloom periods. So in really warm places, folks store them in the fridge for a false winter. Buried deep, amaryllis will be fine if the temp drops to zero.
good photography
thanks for posting
I live in Maryland. Rarely do we get to below zero. (oh darn.. did I just annoy the weather gods?!)
In Arizona we watch the mesquite trees. You can fool a peach tree, but you cannot fool the mesquite.
My wife has tried for many years to have amaryllis bloom and only had one to do so, last year. We come from a area where they grow wild in roadside ditches and bloom like crazy. That really adds insult to injury. LOL
Busy today as the temps have dropped into mid 40º at the height of Florida growing season. Harvested two banana bunches, lettuce and a bushel of partially ripe tomatoes (beefsteak, roma, red and yellow pear). Bumper crop of immature bananas, we’ll try to coax them and keep them warm enough through the month until developed enough to harvest.
Amaryllis should be VERY happy in Maryland soil and climate.
I know that iris are super particular about planting depth. Don’t know about amaryllis.
Yikes. I need to go feed some horses. adios
You are lucky to have such an early start date.LOL
I have no experience with that plant, but I’ll try anything once.LOL
Hard to believe that you can get started so early - I must wait, but I have plenty of other stuff to do.
Where Oh Where is global warming when you need it?
