Free Republic | Jan 3, 2014 | greeneyes

Posted on 01/03/2014 12:19:51 PM PST by greeneyes

The Weekly Gardening Thread is a weekly gathering of folks that love soil, seeds and plants of all kinds. From complete newbies that are looking to start that first potted plant, to gardeners with some acreage, to Master Gardener level and beyond, we would love to hear from you. This thread is non-political, although you will find that most here are conservative folks. No matter what, you won’t be flamed and the only dumb question is the one that isn’t asked. It is impossible to hijack the Weekly Gardening Thread. There is no telling where it will go and... that is part of the fun and interest. Jump in and join us!

NOTE: This is a once a week ping list. We do post to the thread during the week. Links to related articles and discussions which might be of interest are welcomed, so feel free to post them at any time.

We have more black seed leaf lettuce than we can eat. Gave some to a neighbor and she loved it.

I need to pull purple top turnips tomorrow. They are about the size of billiard balls.

“If March 1st is your “last” frost date...”

I’m figuring sometime in Feb. is the last frost date. We usually get our worst cold early in February and that’s when everyone wants March to get here. I will start the March seeds the first of March, so they won’t go outside for a few weeks after that. I do have a few to put under grow lamp in February but they won’t go outside until March.

Wish I had some of that lettuce. Those turnips are a nice size!

Here is a link for guidance on planting dates in Texas. Which large city is the closest to you?

Despite the cooler weather here in central Florida (lows in the mid 40s last night) I still have one plant producing eggplants.

Even spotted a Milkweed Assassin Bug and some nymphs making the rounds.

Every thing has trade offs I guess. We are at freezing temps here, but we have no bug critters to worry about right now.LOL

I am scaling down the number of varieties I’m planting this year and will have a great deal of extra seed that I am wanting to give away. Everything I have is heirloom varieties and the seed itself is all over the place in terms of age but has all been kept in a freezer.

What I’m really hoping for is if someone knows of a community garden that wants seed donations or is wanting to beef up their own to a larger scale on the cheap. I’m willing to pay the postage for anyone who’ll take what I have in one big shot.

Anyone with interest freepmail me and I’ll send you a list of what I’m getting rid of, as I’m sitting down here in the next week to 10 days to inventory and organize what I’m cutting.

I was happy to see the assassin bugs still hanging around. They are one of the beneficial bugs for the garden. Although they are not selective they love to feed on caterpillars. Hope they are still here when the tomatoes start producing in the spring. The can feast on the pesky hornworms.

Hi Greeneyes! I was hoping either you or one of the garden freepers could give me some advice about Amaryllis. I purchased a bulb prior to Christmas and lo and behold... it bloomed Christmas Eve (100% luck). My question is what do I do with the bulb now? Do I plant it in the garden in the Spring or is there a way to keep it somehow so it can bloom again next Christmas? All advice is appreciated!!

So at least 80% of the time you will have no frost after 3/17. Sometimes you might have some frost after that date.

Our date in Missouri is April 20, but I wait a few weeks because we don’t get the optimum temps then, and I like to plant things when it’s a little warmer here.

Hornworms. The bane of my tomato growing efforts. I pick them off and cut them in half with pruning shears. They are hard to see, and just one can do lots of damage. Ugh.

Here’s to the assassin bugs.LOL

I plant leaf lettuce every few weeks, so we always have fresh lettuce for burgers and salads. I buy $.75 pack at a nursery, give away about half the seeds and still have enough for the next year.

Thank you, Greeneyes... I am going to give it a go. My high school friend’s Mother kept and re-used bulbs for years and years. I never learned her “trick” and she unfortunately is now gone. I do know that around Thanksgiving, she got busy with the bulbs (and they ALWAYS bloomed just a day or two before Christmas). Hugs to you, Mom
