Precious In Gods Eyes
January 30, 2014
Read: Psalm 116
In response to the news that a mutual friend of ours had died, a wise brother who knew the Lord sent me these words, Precious in the sight of the Lord is the death of His saints (Ps. 116:15). Our friends vibrant faith in Jesus Christ was the dominant characteristic of his life, and we knew he was home with God in heaven. His family had that assurance as well, but I had been focused only on their sorrow. And its appropriate to consider others during their grief and loss.
But the verse from Psalms turned my thoughts to how the Lord saw the passing of our friend. Something precious is something of great value. Yet, there is a larger meaning here. There is something in the death of a saint that transcends our grief over their absence.
Precious (important and no light matter) in the sight of the Lord is the death of His saints (His loving ones) (The Amplified Bible). Another paraphrase says, His loved ones are very precious to him and he does not lightly let them die (The Living Bible). God is not flippant toward death. The marvel of His grace and power is that, as believers, our loss of life on earth also brings great gain.
Today we have only a glimpse. One day well understand it in the fullness of His light.
So when my last breath
Shall rend the veil in twain
By death I shall escape from death
And life eternal gain. Montgomery
Faith builds a bridge across the gulf of death.

Back in The Day
Back in the day
Wed pile the boys in back,
And drive down the road to the crossing,
Where Farmer Georges field was laying fallow,
For about the fourteenth year,
And the ruts between the bases,
Looked like plow marks,
Made by boots and by bare feet,
Of well-tanned lads in overalls,
And little else but grins and freckles.
Back in the day
Wed stop beside the creek after the ball game,
And swing out for a drop into the coolness,
Of a shaded depth of water, too lazy in the summer,
To go out into the sunny parts downstream,
Where work was to be done,
In turning wheels to grind our well-earned grain,
For making bread to sop up the real food,
Of meat that went unwillingly to Heaven,
Protesting in its innocence and fear.
Back in the day
That lasted near a week of sunny hours,
From the morning light that wound the rooster,
To the last gray dusk that showed the bats the way,
To dust away the wisps of cloudy cobwebs,
That kept the stars from shining bright,
In nights that settled into peaceful silence,
With only pops and fizzles from the fire,
Left banked to sleep until the morning,
When biscuits needed waking for the day,
Back in the day ...

I was raised in the inner city, in Boston MA, so some of the more rural imagery in the poem was not my experience.
However, even in an urban environment, the 50’s were wonderful years, and the spirit of the poem touched me!

I was raised and still live in a rural area. Marissa would like to live in a ‘Neighborhood’ but I enjoy country living. It can be a problem for only children; I was raised with 4 younger brothers and sisters.
Have a Thankful Thursday; I’m thankful for my family.

“neighborhoods” aren’t what they used to be.
Even in a gated community, kids only seem to “get together” on “PLAY DATES” .
NOT like the old days.

I missed you last night Kitty, but it’s so nice to ‘see’ you! ((HUGS)) back to you too.
To: JustAmy
I love your post Amy, and Bob’s poem. I think we’d all like to go back in time, to better days. I guess the young people nowdays think it’s the best of times but even my two son in laws say they would like to have grown up in ‘my time’.
Wishing you a nice day, even though I’m late posting.
