Avis refuses rental because of bad credit (after deducting advance fees)
Avis | 9-25-2013 | vanity

Posted on 09/25/2013 2:27:01 PM PDT by topher

When I appeared at the airport today, Avis refused the rental says I had bad credit.

What I don't understand is that since I paid most of the rental in advance, they could have checked that based on the information I provided.

They charged me a $100 no show fee since they refused to rent me the car.

I have never heard of such nonsense.

Needless to say, I am a little miffed at Avis.

The agent gave a card for contacting a credit bureau and told me to go away...

I used the same credit card as I used for the prepay. It has about $3000 on it currently.

Call your credit card and dispute the payment and fees. You didn’t get a car, you shouldn’t have to pay for anything.

Sounds like you need to contact corporate HQ and promise to do a documentary on your experience w/them.

Contact the card company and dispute the charges.
Check your credit report to see if your identity has been used by theives.

They can’t do that.

Call your credit card company and dispute it.

Don’t give up either.

If you paid with a credit card, call the card company and tell them you aren't going to pay because you didn't get a car, because of Avis' policies.

They will likely reinstate the fee. When they do, go back to the credit card company and have them remove it again. Lather, rinse, repeat until you win. Been there, done that.

I second the “dispute with credit card company”. They took your money but didn’t provide service.

Sounds like their proper opportunity to decline the rental was at the point you reserved the car and presented the credit card to prepay.

Waiting until you show up at the airport counter is tortious behavior. IANAL, but perhaps you should find a hungry shark to consult.

Avis is a private company. If you don’t like their practices go to another company. Trying not to be harsh but we are Capitalistic Society. If one companies does not another one will for the right price.

Avis probably puts a $100 hold on your card when you make the reservation, but since they wouldn’t rent you a vehicle it should be refunded. Seems like they could have let you know before you showed up to get the car too. I would call the CC company to dispute the charges.

Are you saying they did a credit check on you after they took your deposit?

They ran a credit check on you? For renting a car? That sounds crazy.

Next time tell them you are an illegal, gay and have aids.

They will waive the credit check and rent you the care a greatly reduced rate.

America is a failed nation so anything goes.

Based on what you posted, it sounds like Avis couldn’t get approval from your credit card company so they couldn’t protect their interest, i.e. the car.

Check with your credit card company, see what they told Avis.

Most companies require a certain amount of available credit on your card in order to rent. It’s usually much more than the daily rental - something like $250 per $50.

Did you give them permission to run your credit history?

While a debit or prepaid charge card is an acceptable form of rental prepayment online, they may not be accepted for the credit hold required when you pick up your car.
