Needless to say, I am a little miffed at Avis.

The agent gave a card for contacting a credit bureau and told me to go away...

I used the same credit card as I used for the prepay. It has about $3000 on it currently.

Call your credit card and dispute the payment and fees. You didn’t get a car, you shouldn’t have to pay for anything.

Sounds like you need to contact corporate HQ and promise to do a documentary on your experience w/them.

They can’t do that.

Call your credit card company and dispute it.

Don’t give up either.

If you paid with a credit card, call the card company and tell them you aren't going to pay because you didn't get a car, because of Avis' policies.

They will likely reinstate the fee. When they do, go back to the credit card company and have them remove it again. Lather, rinse, repeat until you win. Been there, done that.

Sounds like their proper opportunity to decline the rental was at the point you reserved the car and presented the credit card to prepay.

Waiting until you show up at the airport counter is tortious behavior. IANAL, but perhaps you should find a hungry shark to consult.

Avis probably puts a $100 hold on your card when you make the reservation, but since they wouldn’t rent you a vehicle it should be refunded. Seems like they could have let you know before you showed up to get the car too. I would call the CC company to dispute the charges.

Are you saying they did a credit check on you after they took your deposit?

They ran a credit check on you? For renting a car? That sounds crazy.

Next time tell them you are an illegal, gay and have aids.

They will waive the credit check and rent you the care a greatly reduced rate.

America is a failed nation so anything goes.

Based on what you posted, it sounds like Avis couldn’t get approval from your credit card company so they couldn’t protect their interest, i.e. the car.

Check with your credit card company, see what they told Avis.

Most companies require a certain amount of available credit on your card in order to rent. It’s usually much more than the daily rental - something like $250 per $50.

Avis and Hertz don't accept prepaid cards. Though the card number technically reveals the status as a prepaid card, central reservation were not likely set up to screen for that.

Avis' recent no show fee is designed to encouraged customers to honor reservations, not to collect a fee, and certainly not to collect a fee from a customer who actually shows up on time. I think that this is an Avis franchisee trying to skim a little extra cash. I would call Avis central reservations and ask them to straighten out their franchisee. Tell them you want it resolved today or you will have your lawyer bring an action against Avis itself when you get home.

You may have bigger problems than just not being able to rent a car.

It could be that someone has stolen your identity and is using your good credit and ruining your Credit Score.

Contact each of the credit bureaus and notify them of your stolen identity. Contact all of your credit card companies and have them issue you new cards.

Yep, dispute CC charges, check for identity theft, and contact a media consumer protection TV reporter.

No car, you don't owe 'em a dime.

The credit limit on your card may be too low for their liking, but they can tell you that in advance. Get 'em on TV, you'll get the dough back fast.

sounds like you got declined by the CC company so Avis said see U, most of the time rental car companys require $300 hold on a credit card or Debit card and refund the difference after return of the car.
