Free Republic | September 13, 2013 | greeneyes

Posted on 09/20/2013 12:16:53 PM PDT by greeneyes

The Weekly Gardening Thread is a weekly gathering of folks that love soil, seeds and plants of all kinds. From complete newbies that are looking to start that first potted plant, to gardeners with some acreage, to Master Gardener level and beyond, we would love to hear from you.

This thread is non-political, although you will find that most here are conservative folks. No matter what, you won’t be flamed and the only dumb question is the one that isn’t asked.

It is impossible to hijack the Weekly Gardening Thread ... there is no telling where it will go and that is part of the fun and interest. Jump in and join us!

NOTE: This is a once a week ping list. We do post to the thread during the week. Links to related articles and discussions which might be of interest are welcomed, so feel free to post them at any time.

I like to add it to tea. You can just crush them and add to the tea leaves in your tea ball.

Heat destroys Vitamin C.

I forgot to mention, when I glue the top to the bottom of the stroyfoam cooler, on the ridge of the top, I do but a slight “U” on the edge of the top in the middle of the sides and one in the ends, so some of the water can escape, but still keep a bit in the top, for moisture.

Since it is cool and the sun is shining, I picked up the puppy and we surveyed the containers again.

I think we found where the flowers will form on the giant, outer space taller than I am, Tromboncino Squash. Up and down — OH, just this minute there is a hummingbird visiting the Lantana flowers, then the Sesame flowers and he/she wasn't in a hurry that is so good. I have seen none since the summer of 2010. There were none in the deadly 2011 and none in 2012 as nothing but two rose bushes were out there and if one came, I didn't see it. That dead place needs to be alive and I've helped do that this summer. From my bedroom window on the second floor, I can see into the garden of the right and left of my place, and they are barren, absolutely no plant anywhere in either space.

Back to the squash: Up and down the plant, coming out between a joint of the stalk to a limb, there are growing yellow protrusions, from very small to two inches long, growing. The tendrils that grow out are light green, so these aren't going to be tendrils, they are tinged yellow, I believe flowers will develop somewhere on those yellow protrusions.

I've giving my neck two more days to get itself together, then I'm getting the new hose out there and hooking everything up and will move plants around so it looks somewhat better - it is a mess with my limited presence out there - just staying long enough to water, then get back in the house.

I’ll remember that. I’ve got to have more cheap containers - I need more than I have right now when spring comes.

Yes it does. I think I noted that somewhere or else it was in the article. However, I don’t use boiling water when I make tea.

Ok johnny. How do you sterilize horse litter? I have a bunch out in the pasture and in the shed. I got some for the front raised garden and it was mostly hard round lumps. I almost needed a hatchet to break them up. I soaked some and you know the rest. Have some great horse tea.

Have you tried, Rosebud Tea? It’s wonderful. I like the pink rosebud tea, red rosebud tea is ok too.

Take it easy. No sense injuring your self for looks.LOL

Lots of times I just go out and water and dash back inside. Sometimes the patio gets to looking pretty bad out back. No one else sees it but us though, so I don’t get in a big hurry about it, and do it when I feel better.

Yes, I think Rose hip wine would be good for just about any ailment, ie, raised pinky while holding a glass of wine.

North loop is my most common destination because of HEB and Lowes, but I do use some businesses on Frasier and the seed store in downtown. I rarely go to Wallymart, though.

No I haven’t. I drink lemon zinger, hibiscus tea, green tea, and peppermint mostly adding in a little rose hips and combining one or more for various flavor combos.

For a number of years, my kids bought me all kinds of different teas to try, and I am still working my way to the end of those. LOL.

Rose bud tea sounds delicious though. Will have to try it sometime.

Yes it does. I think I noted that somewhere or else it was in the article. However, I don’t use boiling water when I make tea.

Back in the 1970s I was charged with validating an analytical method developed by someone else for the quantification of ascorbic acid. On the way to realizing the method just did not work (making volatile compounds out of non-volatiles like Vitamin C with silylating reagents) I learned that ascorbic acid falls apart readily, not requiring long or high heat to do so.

I prefer to make most tea at room temperature or in the fridge. I suspect this would be best for rose hips as well.

"Dortmund" makes large hips. It is a gorgeous rose, very tough.

Thank you, greeneyes. I’m thinking of a rose hedge along a strange area in front of the parking lot. It’ll be pretty and provide the buds and hips. GREAT!

I dampen it, place it on a piece of clear plastic, fold the plastic over it, and weigh around the edges. The sunlight, and the bacteria run the temperature up past 150F. Beneficial microbes may remain, but most seeds and evil microbes will die.

I do, and when we go into the country or even the highway between here and Waco or Temple, if I see a cooler, or any thing interesting, it’s investigated. I’m nosy.

Vitamin C is a very unstable vitamin especially pertaining to heat and exposure to light. The less time in heat and light the better. Cooking veggies for 10-20 minutes destroys more than half of the vitamin c.

I’ll have to look at Dortmund. I have been very happy with the Rosa Rugosa though, so far. And it appears to do well in our environment.

We did get the re-potting done today. I pruned one of my ghost peppers and stuck the cuttings into rooting hormone and plated them, so if they grow, I will have more hot pepper plants. Have 10 mater cuttings growing in larger pots. Will need to re-pot once more, but we may have maters in the winter. My wonderful bride planted her new rectangular clay pot with some half price finds from Lowes.
