"Miss" America?
newb2012

Posted on 09/18/2013 8:56:08 AM PDT by newb2012

Some stuff still leaves me puzzled here. How can a 'Bollywood 'dance sequence be considered 'Miss.America's' talent? If someone’s born an American and claim to be all American, wouldn’t they have some original American talent to show and win the prestigious Miss.America title? Does a nation have to become so diverse that it'd loose its own identity? The most sad part is the dance number the winner performed - in no way shows how beautiful Indian fine arts are either. I find the performance to be more of mockery of classical form of the art.

I don't honestly think that any girl of non-Indian descent would have been crowned Miss.India in India or for that matter in any other country. Sonia Gandhi is from the Gandhi family which is still India's first family. Gandhi’s family had been loved and kept on high pedestal by the people of India through her fight for independence and thereafter. They celebrated the family's political victories and mourned each time they lost a Gandhi to extremism through generations. And each time they elected someone from the family to succeed their deceased leader. Yet, because of her Italian origins, Sonia Gandhi is taking a back seat when it comes to leading the country unlike any other person from that family. And that decision is expected and respected by the nation and most leaders.

Each country has its own talent and people capable enough to represent and lead the country. It is important for America to remain America and India to remain India. It’d be lovely see people from any country to stand their ground and take pride and humility in what and where they are from and represent their own country in its originality with its strengths and setbacks. We dont want to see ‘Miss. The Most Diverse Nation On The Planet”, but certainly love to see Miss.America without having to miss America.

Her platform was "diversity," in other words, she's proud to come out in favor of displacing white Americans. And she also expressed her gladness that some young girls (I guess of Indian descent) can finally "relate" to Miss America. So I suppose those little Indian girls could not "relate" to a white Miss America. But white girls are supposed to relate to HER? There's just a smugness in her comments. Beauty pageants don't matter much in the scheme of things. But I believe it's just one more thing, one more incident of gloating, "in your face, white Americans, you're being replaced" kind of thing, that is annoying people.

I think you cut to the core of the matter right there in your very appropriate comment. It wasn't just doing a dance from an unfamiliar culture at least to older American such as myself (age 70+ here). It was the whole shoving of the diversity agenda down our throats. Even worse, she'll be touring the country pushing that:

Davuluri competed on the platform issue of “celebrating diversity through cultural competency.” During her 2014 year of service as Miss America, she will travel about 20,000 miles each month to speak to audiences about her chosen issue. -- Newsweek (Pakistan).

miss america is a stupid sham contest. when you get behind what goes on with judges and the back-biting, the hoops these girls jump through, the tiny crap that’s made into something huge...

it’s like if scientology put on a beauty pageant.

Is is possible to appreciate your own culture and not want to see your countrymen displaced without being a “phobic”?

Im waiting for the foreign jazz or blues song from Africa or Europe, and the story of how the American jazz and blues community heard it and were inspired.

There ain’t one.

Steel & the wheel weren’t invented in America but the horseless carriage certainly was.

I hate to burst your bubble, but that's not true. Why resort to such hyperbole, when it just undermines your assertion?

The first known steam-powered vehicle was built in China, in the 1600's. The first one known to be able to carry passengers were built in France, and then England in the 1700's.

“Aha, just like global warming is settled science.”

Yes it is rather like global warming. You made a claim, and I asked for proof. And then you respond with a descent into trivial insults. So indeed, it is reminiscent of global warming now that you mention it.

It is important for America to remain America and India to remain India.

No, it is imperative that America ideals remain American, and that Indians, and everyone else who is willing to embrace American ideals, become Americans. The Indians that want to live under Indian color-ism and caste-ism, please stay home. The Indians that want to live under American liberty, ontological equality, and the rule of law, please come here legally, move in to the empty house down the street, cook all the curry and chutney you want, and join with me in building, expanding, enhancing, and perpetuating American ideals and American exceptionalism, while adding the touches of your culture to the brilliant mixture that is American culture.

I'm not sensitive at all, but I am a student of music.

To claim that jazz and blues are not American cultural inventions is just simply wrong.

Nobody's saying that they didn't build upon or incorporate musical styles from other cultures (Malian griot music, for example), but they are unequivocally unique American creations.

You're the only person I've ever come across who would try to deny it.

For the record, the last two Miss Americas were white. Not sure if one needs to go through the whole list.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Miss_America_titleholders

(2012) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Laura_Kaeppeler

(2013) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mallory_Hagan

2 Miss New Yorks in 3 years?? Maybe that is where it isn’t fair.
For Miss USA 2013:
“During Good Morning America weatherman Sam Champion asked her the following question: “In the wake of the Newtown tragedy there has been a lot of talk about gun control. One solution being proposed is an armed guard in every school. Do you think that would make our schools safer?” Hagan’s response was “I don’t think the proper way to fight violence is with violence. I think the proper way is to educate people on guns and the ways we can use them properly. We can lock them up, we can have gun safety classes, we can have a longer waiting period.”

Looks like the Miss America just picked will be for the year 2014 actually.

“The first known steam-powered vehicle was built in China, in the 1600’s”

Using your argument, that’s impossible since the wheel wasn’t invented in China and all form on technology are imported from other cultures....

I am so grateful she won. What a wonderful example of the American Spirit. She was vilified terribly by many people thinking she was a Muslim....what the heck is wrong with people? She just shrugged it off. God Bless this wonderful woman who has to put up with such bizarre people.

it'd loose its own identity?

Look up the word "loose" and you will find that it is not the word to use in this context. That would be "lose."

Political Correctness. Wait until a transgendered freak wins.

Well until then, just enjoy the fact that a beautiful woman won. God Bless the United States of America and Miss America.

I'll jump in here and give an answer to your question: I would not consider any performance that has extended beyond its ethnic group and into the mainstream culture as inappropriate. Clog dancing, opera, polka, bagpipes would pass that criteria.

One question I have is "why is there never a woman who sings country crowned Miss America"? It boggles the mind to look at Carrie Underwood and Kelli Pickler, for example, with their fabulous talent, personality/presentation and good clean-cut all American looks. Why do they win TV star search shows when audiences vote, but you never see young women such as them win Miss America?

Besides that, wouldn't it have made more sense culturally to let Miss Kansas use archery or shooting as her talent than it did to accept "Bollywood" as representative of our culture?

Apparently, something got lost in the translation.

I never claimed they weren't invented here. I simply said they were derived from other music, that didn't originate within the US.

"Homegrown" means "original" to me, although maybe not to you. But admittedly, even "homegrown" could be from a "seed" that originates elsewhere.

Perhaps we are in violent agreement, and it's only semantics.

Like so much American stuff it’s complicated. At their blues and jazz are African rhythm structures performed on instruments largely invented in Europe and the melding happened in America. So where’s the music from? All depends on where you decide is the beginning.

That IS the agenda these days.

white women might as well not enter anymore due to them wanting to have headlines like the first what ever.

Lord Almighty. Really? Out of what? 65 years, we have had about two non white woman win. And people claim that conservatives are pure as snow when it comes to being fair. I am embarrassed for you (with that comment).
