10,000 year old "calendar" found in Scottish field

The world's oldest calendar has been discovered in a field in Scotland, a group of British archeologists believe.

The twelve excavated pits in an Aberdeen field seem to mimic phases of the moon to track months over a year.

"The evidence suggests that hunter-gatherer societies in Scotland had both the need and sophistication to track time across the years, to correct for seasonal drift of the lunar year and that this occurred nearly 5,000 years before the first formal calendars known in the Near East," [the project leader Vince] Gaffney told various media.

So end to end...these rocks are about 35 miles or approx. 3 miles apart. Calendar sounds even more dumb when I figured the mileage. IMHO of course

What year does this calendar end ?

Will the media infer a new Doomsday date from it ?

Coincidence or design?

One French league = 3 miles

from Old French “ligue”

And what are the French doing in Scotland anyway?

For some reason, France and Scotland have long been allies.

The French King even used to be protected by the “Scottish Guard” a 100 man force of Scots. I have no idea how that came about either.

For some reason, France and Scotland have long been allies.

Both countries, for fairly obvious reasons, were generally at odds with England, and therefore were natural allies for each other.

The French King even used to be protected by the “Scottish Guard” a 100 man force of Scots. I have no idea how that came about either.

Monarchs throughout history have always had the problem that guards drawn from among their own people reflect those people's political divisions, and tend to determine who the monarch will be, if necessary by offing the current one. Or they might be unwilling to kill their own people in time of revolt.

See Praetorian Guard, Russian Guards, Janissary Corps, etc.

To avoid this, monarchs often brought in foreigners to act as their primary guards. Caligula used Germans. Byzantine emperors used Varangians. Most Muslim sultans had Turkish or Nubian slave guards. The French kings had Swiss and Scottish guards. The popes still do.

The locals hate the foreign guards, who return the feeling, and are perfectly willing to slaughter them when required.
