Does anyone have thoughts on urban, suburban, or rural fortifications? Would traditional fences, brick/stone walls, dirt/sandbag berms, be helpful in protecting a home or a neighborhood, would those draw more challenges than they would discourage, or does their value depend on the size and capabilities of the neighborhood and on the proximity of areas with feral gangs?

Don't look for dramatic 6-day riots like Watts in 1965. There might be a few such conflagrations, but I believe the urban meltdown will take place over a few years, with occasional spikes in the summers.
Unless/until the power grid goes suddenly and stays down for more than a week or two. Then the end will come quickly.

I agree it has. It's a creeping war - one reads about race killing another race in another state, then reads about it in your state and then reads it in your city, your town, your community and the numbers start adding up, then you get used to hearing about the killings. You just transitioned to an acceptance of a new normal.

During the last “gas shortage” we witnessed a fistfight at a local gas station over the last few drops of gasoline at a gas station in very small town America.. Not urban warfare, but an example of how things can get out of control.

Not necessary the weakest one in terms of strength, expect to see first casualties among the people who are most dependent on society and have very bad ability to adapt.
So while 70 years man surely looks like guy who is gonna die among first one when you compare it to the young athletic looking teacher (or whatever) in reality that old guy might be able to adapt faster, because he comes from poor background and grew up in sort of the same survival scenario. That athletic looking dude is maybe lost because his strong faith in society and good human nature.
The reality is, I am probably personally much more durable than most. I have been in hell before, in my 12 step acting-out phase. While I am no longer in that phase, the lessons of what it is to do without NEARLY EVERYTHING have stayed with me. I found out I was mentally and spiritually durable. I can make it through almost anything. I can live without AC and computers and phones. I can live in the woods without a tent and only one sheet draped over me to try, unsuccessfully, to keep skeeters off. I have gone without food and had to carry on anyways.
I will probably be one of the ones that make it, provided I don't get a bit of bad luck somehow.
The question you have to ask in any SHTF scenario is “what will the military do?” The Army and Marine Corps (including Guard and Reserve components) have 100+ ground force battalions and plenty of fuel, rations, ammunition and air support. Most of the population and industrial infrastructure is within range of naval gunnery and all of it is reachable by strategic bombers and fighter-bombers. Unless the military stays in its quarters, or completely dissolve with their armories and storehouses somehow destroyed, what those battalions, ships and planes do is going to determine how it goes.
(You don’t need to secure every 40 acre spread in the middle of nowhere or every ghetto housing project, and you probably don’t even need to control any of them — you just have to control infrastructure for food, fuel and media, and that’s more than enough to achieve whatever disposition of chaos you choose.)
Looks like the economic decline is much more gradual than a “storm.” Maybe tent cities full of impoverished ex-pensioners and other jobless folks, without children and generally helpless, nearly all of them dying of old age within a very short period of time. Hordes of rich foreigners will buy the homes that they once had, as has already happened to many.

Those who cling to normalcy bias will deny it: the race war has already begun.
It did not start with riots in the streets and ash in the skies, as we thought it would.
It started with the word being quietly put out by the Left and the Media, and now whites are being hunted on the streets by feral blacks.
But the Leftists don’t want you to know it yet. They don’t want you to know that you’re part of an obvious, in-your-face race war. They want whites to feel an undertow of dread, to feel powerless and helpless against the black horde that is lurking, waiting inside the urban kraals.
The ever-mounting tide of hate from the Left is frightening people. Fear causes paralysis. And that leads to inaction, whether by not acting against it, or refusing to accept the truth.
Face the truth: he race war has begun, and the feral blacks are the shock troops.
