We are at interesting point in time. It might be point that changes human history if some of those who rule us (sorry to call it like that but that is situation right now) play their game and it escalates. Im happy to know most of you have already proper storage and skills to try your best when storm hits. Let’s hope we don’t need anything of this.
If you have time, stop eating (but maybe get drink) and spend half hour to watch the video below. It is just out since 4th of September 2013 but shows bit older video footage of people fighting for their survival in Syria in current conflict. It’s bloody and maybe disturbing for some, so maybe don't eat. I speak a lot about how I moved through city and fought in my survival course and see many similarities. Too many, so I had to take some breaks looking at this. Anyway, I have comments about this video below.

Does anyone have thoughts on urban, suburban, or rural fortifications? Would traditional fences, brick/stone walls, dirt/sandbag berms, be helpful in protecting a home or a neighborhood, would those draw more challenges than they would discourage, or does their value depend on the size and capabilities of the neighborhood and on the proximity of areas with feral gangs?

Don't look for dramatic 6-day riots like Watts in 1965. There might be a few such conflagrations, but I believe the urban meltdown will take place over a few years, with occasional spikes in the summers.
Unless/until the power grid goes suddenly and stays down for more than a week or two. Then the end will come quickly.
I live in an isolated part of rural upstate NY, and pray that the distance and Poconos are enough to keep the crazed masses and smoke from NY City away.

Consider getting a book called “A Failure of Civility” written by Mike Garand and Jack Lawson. Two guys with urban spec ops training. I saw it here on FR. A technical guide to turning urban areas into defensive zones among many other things.

Fuggetabouddit. The European landscape is dotted with the bones of broken fortifications, going back centuries. Devote energy to building alliances, sharing skill sets, food, and meds. Think “Mobile, Agile, and Hostile.” Infections and waterborne illnesses will be huge. Sepsis/”soldier’s belly” will be your Nr. 1 threat.
