Southern Europeans get a significant portion of their genetic ancestry from North Africa, new research suggests.
The findings are perhaps not surprising, given that the Romans occupied North Africa and set up extensive trade routes in the region, and the Moors, a North African people, ruled a medieval territory called El-Andalus on the Iberian Peninsula.
But the findings, published today (June 3) in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, suggest the impact of these connections went beyond culture and architecture, and may explain why Southern Europeans have more genetic diversity than their northern counterparts.
"The higher level of genetic variation in Southern Europeans reflects gene flow from North Africa during historical times. We're talking about the last 2,000 years, really from the Middle Ages during which there was occupation in Spain," said study co-author Carlos Bustamante, a geneticist at Stanford University....

My Latina granddaughter has really curly hair. In spite of her blue eyes, I’m pretty sure that there’s some African in her. Gorgeous skin and if she would leave it alone, wonderful hair but of course she wants it straight.
Great. My family is Andalusian so I can now claim privileges for being Hispanic-African-Transexual-Lesbian...
In all seriousness, I’ve long stated the way to finally destroy all affirmative action programs is for people who are visually clearly “white” but have had detailed genetic testing finding some Sub-Saharan African markers to apply for such programs and sue when they are denied.
Yeah, everybody’s African these days.
Except the president, of course.
So I guess that means that writing, literature, history, government, and pretty much every single invention that’s made any difference whatsoever in the past three thousand years... all of that is due to the glories of Africa, eh?
Right.
My left nut.
So it appears that Dennis Hopper’s musings about Christopher Walken’s ancestry in True Romance has some scientific basis....
Depending on your pov. Everyone is either OOE or OOA.
Well, it’s hardly surprising: in historic times, before the rise of Islam, the entire Mediterranean rim was part of the Roman Empire, with vibrant trade which continued even after Imperial rule of the western provinces became a legal fiction, with the Romanized “barbarian” military caste setting up kingdoms with the bounds of the still-theoretically-existing Empire, rather than a reality. Actually, Islam shut down the mixing of populations between North Africa and Europe, except in Muslim-occupied parts of Europe, while before that it was a general phenomenon.
North Africa a “chocolate” city?
‘Afro-European’ classification of “race”
is now to be added to all federal documents.
Well, that answers the question of whether the Swallow was African or European.
Well, I don’t know is an acceptable answer.
After centuries of women and men being raped by invading Muslims, a few genes are bound to stick around.
Not more African than I thought, because I always thought, after living in Italy as a child and then spending time in the Caribbean, that Italians were essentially mulatto.
Northern Europeans have long picked on Spain, saying “Africa begins at the Pyrenees”. Maybe they were more right than they knew.
Is North African the same as Sub-Saharan African?
No.
Under Roman rule there was population movement from North Africa to Italy (St. Monica died in Ostia; the Roman playwright Terence was supposedly born in Carthage). Enslaved people from all over were brought to Rome ("the Orontes flowed into the Tiber"). Soldiers from North Africa might end up on a distant frontier in Europe or the Middle East.
(Don't expect anything--least of all truth--to shut these people up though. Truth is not a consideration to them and has nothing to do with their agenda.)
Great.
So gimme my reparations you honky whiteycrackers!
