Problem with Gently is that I'm having trouble finding Seasons 5 and 6. They are currently filming 7 now in Durham, England. Netflix only has the first four. Does anyone know how to get BBC broadcasts or of some other site like Netflix that might have these programs. Also, any other recs for really good shows like these? Thanks FREEPERS! MM

Don’t forget Doc Martin and the new series Selfridge. They’re shooting the latest Downton Abbey. Pity they killed off the heir ... something is brewing I think .... I have the first three series of Downton Abbey on DVD. Check Amazon. R/Janey

I loved "Vanity Fair" (NOT the one with Reese Witherspoon. The one filmed in '98 starring Natasha Little).

It's a little older than the ones you've been watching but I thought it was great.

Okay ... Wait ... You haven’t seen the British “Sherlock” series? They’re on Netflix and brilliant!

I like Midsomer Murders - the first 13 seasons are available on Netflix streaming. Foley’s War was a great watch. Will have to check out Gently. Happy viewing!

My personal favourite was a cop show from about a decade ago called Life on Mars. It’s about a Manchester detective who gets hit by a car and wakes up in 1971.

We like Foyle’s War; Detective Morse; Inspector Lewis (spin off Morse) we also watched Frost detective series but it was more Cockney than others and made dialogue sometimes hard to follow and shows a bit of downers.

Want something gritty....try “Spiral”

Something with a bit of humanistic stuff...try “The Last Detective”

Or...”Rebus” (human and grit)

MI-5 is not to be missed, if you haven’t already seen it.

Widely available on DVD.

I get a lot of my British programming from UK torrent sites, but Netflix has some excellent offerings for British mysteries/dramas.

Jonathan Creek, Inspector Morse, Inspector Lewis, Whitechapel, Midsomer Murders, Inspector Lynley, are all available from Netflix.

Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy then (in that order) Smiley’s People both with Sir Alec Guinness as George Smiley. A very faithful adaptation of LeCarre’s books and runs circles around the recent movie version of Tinker Tailor.

A movie that is pure ham is Murder By Death. Neil Simon’s send up of every Saturday matinee B movie mystery all rolled up in one. Wonderful roles for Peter Falk, David Niven, Maggie Smith, Peter Sellers and (of all people) Truman Capote. If you know those old B movies, you’ll recognize the characters. And those puns !!

Consider Sherlock Holmes as portrayed by Jeremy Brett.

It is fantastic! Brett portrayed Holmes exactly as Holmes was meant to be: brilliant, impatient, and quirky.

http://www.amazon.com/Sherlock-Holmes-Complete-Granada-Television/dp/B000RPCJB6/ref=sr_1_1?s=movies-tv&ie=UTF8&qid=1367036003&sr=1-1&keywords=sherlock+holmes+jeremy+brett

Read some of the reviews there and you'll see what I mean.

Here's the only downside. Once you've seen Brett as Holmes, no one else will do.

Does it have to be British? I also have liked Doc Martin. I haven’t gotten to Wallander yet, but heard it is good. And there was a Canadian series I can’t seem to find. I have watched a few episodes of Annika Bengtzon: Crime Reporter. I think that is a subtitle series.

Not as good as Foyle's but have you tried Rosemary and Thyme? Female crime solvers - I think one is a botanist.... its been awhile. They are on Netflix as is MI-5....

A little more like Downton (the Masterpiece Classics) - have you seen Cranford or Larkrise to Candleford. Those are 2 of my favorites that are available on Netflix - but only on DVD (not streaming).
