Problem with Gently is that I'm having trouble finding Seasons 5 and 6. They are currently filming 7 now in Durham, England. Netflix only has the first four. Does anyone know how to get BBC broadcasts or of some other site like Netflix that might have these programs. Also, any other recs for really good shows like these? Thanks FREEPERS! MM

Give Vera a look, Inspector Lynley, Wycliffe, eary Taggart, Blue Murder, Dalziel and Pascoe, Ruth Rendell Mysteries, Death in Paradise, Silent Witness, A Touch of Frost, Rebus, New Tricks, Waking the Dead. You have to know about Cracker, Lewis and Midsommer murders. Not sure if they are all available on Amazon or Netflix. Anything can be “found”. Take it back. I’ve only found season 5 of George Gently.

The Bletchley Circle was supposed to start airing on PBS on April 21st. I've already seen it and it's very good. A second season is planned.

I really enjoy “Midsomer Murders”, “Waking The Dead”, “Blue Murder”, and “Cadfael” series. For non streaming series I have lately gotten hooked on “Justified”.

Garrow's Law is also very good if you like period dramas. Each episode is drawn from Barrister William Garrow's actual 18th-century cases.

As well Blue Murder with Caroline Quentin, who also stars in previously the mentioned Jonathan Creek mysteries. Both programs are available from Netflix.

Your local library sometimes has DVDs.

A widower, a compulsive gambler with a dark secret in his past, an alcoholic with OCD team with a dog-killer to solve crimes.

Backstory: Detective Superintendent Sandra Pullman is derailed from the fast track when a kidnap rescue she led went pear-shaped (the problem was not the kidnapped buisnesman broke his leg in the rescue, but that she was attacked by the gang's guard dog. Sandra "You shoot one bloody dog in this country...") and put in charge of the Unsolved Crime and Open Case Squad, composed of retired detectives from the 80s.

With combined acting experience of 165+ years the cast chemisty is amazing.

NB This applies to the first 8 series, there have been recent cast resignations, and the priducers seem to be casting for a younger demographic.

James Bolam, 67 when the series started, replaced by Denis Lawson (65)
Alun Armstrong, 56 when he started,. replaced by Nicholas Lyndhurst (51)
No word on the replacemen for Amanda Redmond (45 when the series started), but on the trend it could be Jenna Louise Coleman.

Jekyll. It is creepy and it only lasted a short time, but it is very good. Netflix has it for streaming. It is a modern version of Jekyll and Hyde. James Nesbit does an amazing job.

The newer versions of Sherlock Holmes are pretty good as well. Again Netflix has the one set in the proper period and one set in our current era. I like both.

I can’t believe no one mentioned Ripper Street!

Also, for something that reminds me of Northern Exposure, try Hamish MacBeth.

The Duchess of Duke Street is what I’ve been watching. It is not a detective series, and made in the 70’s, but certainly entertaining. I have one series in my queue called New Tricks, looks interesting... There’s also Monarch of the Glen, Lark Rise to Candleford; I have not seen these two yet, but look forward to it. Try Garrow’s Law, that was interesting. Cranford and Return to Cranford were good, Judi Dench is in these two.

A touch if frost. It was an itv series so you won’t have heard of it via the BBC.

I guess that “Rumpole of the Bailey” doesn't quite fit your definition of “who dunnits” in that most of the stories don't involve murder and sometimes the bad one gets away and an innocent gets convicted.

If you want dark, try to find “DCI Banks.” Several years ago there was a great Brit detective series called “Midsomer Murders.” Also, a truly excellent Brit series, police procedural, was called “Life on Mars.” From years back, there was a one-off BBC drama called “A Dark Adapted Eye” that was very fine.

I really enjoyed the Dangerous Davies series of whodunits. I have never seen the film of the same name but the series is a keeper and needs to be watched in consecutive order.

If you like Downtown abbey you most likely would enjoy UPSTAIRS Downstairs from the Beeb during the seventies. I think it would age well.
