New Study Shows 59% of “Tuna” Sold in the U.S. Isn’t Tuna
Zero Hedge ^ | March 2, 2013 | Michael Krieger

Posted on 03/03/2013 12:05:25 AM PST by Zakeet

This is just the latest revelation in the stealth inflation and food fraud theme I have written about frequently in recent months. The non-profit group Oceana took samples of 1,215 fish sold in the U.S. and genetic tests found that that 59% of those labeled tuna were mislabeled.

It seems that “white tuna” should be avoided in particular as “84% of fish samples labeled 'white tuna' were actually escolar, a fish that can cause prolonged, uncontrollable, oily anal leakage.”

Oh and if you live in my hometown of New York City, you should pay particular attention:

Big Apple has big problem with seafood fraud: 94 percent of tuna and more than three quarters of sushi samples in New York City mislabeled.

Of the 142 fish samples collected in New York, 39 percent were mislabeled. New York City led the nation with the highest occurrence of mislabeled salmon as well as the highest amount of fraud among salmon collected from grocery stores and restaurants.

The full report from Oceana can be found here.

Bon appétit!

This just follows the trend that, because of the Republican sequester that obama couldn’t stop, 125% of all horse meat is labeled incorrectly. Also, due to the sequester, there will not be enough janitors available to clean up the oily anal leakage in our schools.

Thank you. That was the first thing that came to mind when I saw the name StarKist. If only she could be canned.

When I was a lad I participated in a bit of fraud. I learned from the other wharf rats how to make some money with the skates and sting rays the tourist fishermen sometimes brought back from their charter fishing trips. With a sharpened piece of half inch pipe we cut scallops out of the rays and skates and sold them in pint jars to the restaurants.

As an adult out to dinner with my brother-in-law I was treated to his most favorite seafood, scallops. At first sight i suspected and at first taste I knew that it was something like skate. Shark and its relatives are a bit bitter and I find that many who suppose themselves connoisseurs of scallops think that bitter is the proper taste and would reject the real thing.

Some of the names on that list certainly water down the credibility of the org...and the report.

Unfortunately this falls under the umbrella of “even a blind squirrel finds a nut every once in a while”. Fraud in the seafood industry has been reported for years and from reliable sources. Did you know there’s no such fish as Chillean Seabass? Anyway when buying fish it’s definately buyer beware.

I was trying to think of the name of that stuff. I ate a big bag of fat free potato chips while traveling several years ago, and had the scours for 2 days, I think olestra in those chips is what did it.

I will say just this.

I searched the internet, and the only reference I could find to this is a paper done in 2009 that found that in NY City, a lot of sushi bars had this issue with tuna.

You’d think if millions of people were getting oily discharge from their butts, there would be at least one article about it in the news.

Oh, there were lots of web references to this story, but they were all on the PETA and vegetarian websites.

That oily anal leakage will burn for hours. I eat three cans of almost tuna daily and find I can run a diesel generator for an hour powered only by my daily oily anal leakage.

Blessing in disguise? You bet!

Send me a dollar and I can get you the details.

About Oceana, the group sponsoring the study:
Oceana, founded in 2001, is the largest international organization focused solely on ocean conservation. Our offices in North America, South America and Europe work together on a limited number of strategic, directed campaigns to achieve measurable outcomes that will help return our oceans to former levels of abundance. We believe in the importance of science in identifying problems and solutions. Our scientists work closely with our teams of economists, lawyers and advocates to achieve tangible results for the oceans.

They are pushing increased government regulation, knowing that we can't afford it, in the hopes it will greatly drive up fish prices.

BTW, this is something the market could correct, if it was as rampant as they claim. I would think that any person who bought a can of tuna and had the symptoms mentioned could sue.

That would force the companies selling tuna to crack down on their suppliers, and then the suppliers on the distributers, and to the original sources.

Lawsuits, people making private claims against others who break contracts (like the contract for selling tuna as tuna), are an efficient way of regulating this type of activity.

The study is very interesting. The biggest "flaw" is that they mixed sushi bars with grocery stores and restaurants. Three vastly different distribution chains, with highly different regulation.

And they note that in most cases, it is the sushi bar samples that drove the high numbers, for example in Washington DC only 2% of the grocery stores had anything mislabeled.

Also, they hit dozens of outlets, and only collected a total of 1200 or so samples, of dozens of fish. So in some cases, they might have only collected 1 or 2 samples.

My guess is they found some disreputable sushi bars and got most of their samples from them, to drive up the numbers.

The study just came out, but they circulated a petition about it last year.

And I can bet that they would LOVE Bloomberg to join them in regulating the fishing industry.

If you have an oily anus you sure don’t want it to start leaking.

I think but don’t find it in the report that they are referring to fresh fish not canned. One problem before the retailer gets the product is where did the mislabeling start, st the boat, fish monger, or processor?

Wasn’t oily anal leakage the end result from eating any products with Olestra in it like potato chips? Is Olestra still being used or has it been properly banned?
