Astronomy Picture of the Day -- A Venus Transit Over the Baltic Sea
NASA ^ | June 13, 2012 | (see photo credit)

Posted on 06/13/2012 2:40:37 PM PDT by SunkenCiv

Explanation: Waiting years and traveling kilometers -- all to get a shot like this. And even with all of this planning, a good bit of luck was helpful. As the Sun rose over the Baltic Sea last Wednesday as seen from Fehmarn Island in northern Germany, photographer Jens Hackmann was ready for the very unusual black dot of Venus to appear superimposed. Less expected were the textures of clouds and haze that would tint different levels of the Sun various shades of red. And possibly the luckiest gift of all was a flicker of a rare green flash at the very top of the Sun. The above image is, of course, just one of many spectacular pictures taken last week of the last transit of the planet Venus across the face of the Sun for the next 105 years.

Venus being larger than Earth really shows how large our sun is.

Awesome!!!! The boats kinda spoil the pic, but it’s still very good. Without boats, that would without a doubt be Desktop wallpaper material.

Venus is very similar in size to Earth.

Yep, ‘bout the same size. Got my facts a bit off so I guess I’ll go stand in the corner for a while.

The Venus shadow almost looks like two circles superimposed on each other - anyone know why that is?

Well as I wrote to several posters:

Think I'll go swallow some rhubarb or sumptin'

Look at the bright side, you may have to stand in the corner but you don’t have to wear the cap./\

What I have to learn here is to make sure of my facts before I post. I’ve been remiss on that several times to my embarrassment. But at least I use spell-check (me, not you).

Cool stuff, Maynard!

I haven't heard somebody say that since the 70s, when I was in high school. ;-)

Just a couple of little space news items for the day.

New Horizons is now less than 9 AU from Pluto and the Curiosity rover is due to land on Mars in August.

It will be interesting to see if the can pull off the Curiosity landing since its the size of an SUV and will be lowered to the surface by crane under a rocket.
