EXCLUSIVE: Apple Has Destroyed 490,000 American Jobs
Business Insider ^ | May 1, 2012, 12:02 PM | Eric Platt and Ben Duronio

Posted on 05/04/2012 4:57:06 PM PDT by Swordmaker

After taking heat for shipping jobs to China and contracting to employers with questionable labor conditions, Apple (rather publicly) took credit for creating more than half a million jobs in the U.S.

514,000 to be exact.

That figure included nearly 50,000 employees in its retail network and its corporate headquarters, where products are designed.

But it also included FedEx and UPS employees who deliver its products and employees at Corning who make glass for iPads and iPhones.

So Apple basically counts anyone vaguely associated with the company or its products as a job that Apple created.

But what about the competitors Apple has bumped off in its relentless move to the top?

What about the once-profitable markets, products, and companies it has destroyed? What happened to those jobs?

Business Insider analyzed data on Bloomberg, went through dozens of 10-Ks, and read through layoff announcements to see how Apple's peers have done.

What we found:

Apple has destroyed nearly as many jobs as it helped create, eliminating some 490,570 positions.

"$400 billion in Chinese goods last year"

You said that.

Sure did

I think it is higher

Here is my source. Where's yours?

Still even your number is a HUGE number and how many jobs is that

How many?

A country that has to have other countries( mainly China) make 2.2 trillion of the things we use and you say that is ok?

I said that? Where?

imagine how many jobs, technology , factories etc we'd have in the U.S. if we produced just 1/3 of that 2.2 trillion that we import from other countries?

It's true, if we made all our cheap plastic toys and pink flamingo lawn ornaments, we'd have lots of high technology, high paying jobs.

as I said practically everything we use will be made in China.

Yeah, I already ridiculed that silly claim.

Practically everyone knows that most of the stuff we use in made in China .

Yeah, $400 billion in a $15 trillion economy translates into "most".

Only you and some other free traders believe otherwise

You're right, free traders are much better at math than you.

And you wonder why we have to borrow so much ,

I don't wonder at all, it's because our government spends way too much.

(100 trillion in unfunded liabilities

Yeah, the government promises way too much future spending.

you are not living in reality.

You're funny.

You said you were going to reply point by point. Let me know when you get around to that. Especially this one.

You free traders agree with Obama, democrats and Marx on this free trade.

Please explain how. Be as precise as you can.

Okay lets take this 1 or 2 point at a time(who's counting?).

United States imports were worth 238.6 Billion USD in March of 2012( that's 2.8 trillion or almost 3 trillion $ per year for those in Rio linda). That's most of the stuff we use is made in other countries( the biggest culprit China). So my "ridiculous claim" that SOON practially everything we use will be made in other countries is actually truth(look at the spike in that graph).
http://www.tradingeconomics.com/united-states/imports

And look at that graph and see that imports are skyrocketing even every month. That is the worst part the incredible increase in imports.

. There is no reason we have to import that many products and that is not good for the U.S. In fact it's disastrous. You say the economy is 15 trillion . LOL yeah that's what the propagandists say. Actually they say consumer spending is the largest part of that 15 trillion and what is that consumers and government borrowing so consumers can spend more on China products.

The U.S. has almost every natural resource and we were we above any country in technology and manufacturing a few decades ago.

The whole electronics industry and the thousands of high tech products is entirely in China now. You think a country can prosper if they don't and can't make these high tech products?

The low intellect of the average American worker is what is causing so many layoffs and so many jobs to be moved out of the country. American companies with stupid employees can't remain profitable.

This trend will increase as technology becomes more of our everyday lives.

Contrary to popular belief, fish rot from the guts outward, not from the head down. American companies are rotting from the inside out.

I'll reply more later to your “I'm against freedom” accusation. Let me just say that is ridiculous. We didn't trade with communist China for all 40 years of the cold war. Trading with China has nothing to do with our freedom. I'm for keeping the government as small as possible. The government is taking our liberties and that is due to the growth of domestic government , growth of domestic laws against U.S. citizens. I am for putting restrictions on communist china and illegals not on U.s. companies or citizens INSIDE the U.S.. and even though free trade with China has exploded our freedoms have been taken away at the same time free trade has been growing.

You saying that I'm against freedom because I want China stopped is the same thing as you saying that we should allow 2 billion illegals that want to come to America to come here otherwise then I'm against freedom for Americans to choose to buy the cheap services that 3rd world immigrants would provide. Yes I'm sure some moron Americans would love to hire some 3rd world illegals to do his garden,or clean his house, or work in his chicken farm. Yes not letting in 2 billion 3rd worlders would lessen these idiots freedom to choose to buy cheap immigrants’ services : but letting in 2 billion 3rd worlders would destroy our freedom completely as China products are doing now.

I am for a complete embargo of China as was the case for 40 years of the cold war.

But at a minimum I am for very high tarriffs on china products. The U.s. can put high tariffs on imports and then eliminate the income tax on U.S. citizens and U.S corporations. So then communist China and other countries are taxed and U.S. citizens are not taxed. So then that would increase our freedom . See having more money increases our freedom because we can choose where we want to live etc. We could eliminate the marxist property taxes and income taxes completely if we replace them with very high tariffs on imported products especially the China products. The U.S. imports almost 3 trillion dollars in foreign products per year: so a high tariffs on that would eliminate the income taxes and property taxes for Americans. Why are you for protecting China and China's war on the U.S.A (just economic war for now) at the expense of U.S. citizens, the U.S., and our freedom? the damn communist China government just bought a major U.S. bank how is that increasing our freedom.?

Obama just recently allowed the State of china to buy American banks. See these people the democrats are international socialists bent on destroying America. China and all these foreign countries are buying up America which will destroy our culture. Free trade is what the international socialists have used to destroy our U.S. border, culture, and economy.

We need to protect our culture, country, border etc. from foreign countries. You free traders have been brainwashed by the big media and don't realize the crises we are in .

the media is hiding that Obama gave approval for China to buy U.S. banks:

Free trade is what the international socialists have used to destroy our U.S. border, culture, and economy.

Free trade doesn't destroy borders, governments without the will to defend them destroy borders. The border is not in the least affected by my purchase of a Korean car or a washing machine made in Mexico. Your assertion is completely invalid.

You free traders have been brainwashed by the big media and don't realize the crises we are in .

No, I haven't. The freedom to trade my property for that of someone else is as basic a liberty as those of speech or religion. But you and the other protectionists would prefer government bureaucrats to control whom we may trade with -- all in the common interest, of course.

You should really examine your theories when you find yourself actually advocating more government control over our lives.

See these people the democrats are international socialists bent on destroying America.

Of course, they are. And they don't believe in anything close to free trade, either. Quit believing what they tell you.

The U.s. can put high tariffs on imports and then eliminate the income tax on U.S. citizens and U.S corporations.

The problem with that is that running the government from tariffs is like funding programs through cigarette taxes. If the tariff or the tax works as hoped, the revenue from it will constantly decline.

So then communist China and other countries are taxed and U.S. citizens are not taxed.

The U.S. consumer will always pay the tax in higher prices charged to cover the cost of the tariff.

The solution to the trade imbalance is to eliminate the Fed's policy of inflation. Trade deficits are always and everywhere caused by monetary inflation. The Keynesians who dominate American economics won't tell you that, but it was well-known right up until the Depression.

The Germans understand it well which is why they're fighting tooth and nail to keep the Euro from being inflated any more than it has been. They understand well that rising prices and wages in Germany will wipe out their technological advantages and cripple their exports.

We can erase the trade deficit and improve our own economic growth through more freedom -- not through further controls and taxes.

Wrong. We use a lot more than 238.6 billion a month.

There is no reason we have to import that many products

That's en excellent idea. You could build a factory to make some of the stuff we currently import from China. Let me know when you start up, I'll be sure to throw some business your way.

You say the economy is 15 trillion .

Yes. There is a stat called Gross Domestic Product. You can look it up!

Actually they say consumer spending is the largest part of that 15 trillion

Well, you see, if you make a product (part of Gross Domestic Product) and consumers don't spend their money on it, you'll soon stop producing it.

The U.S. has almost every natural resource

Yes we do. And we need to make it easier to extract those resources.

and we were we above any country in technology and manufacturing a few decades ago.

Are you under the impression that we no longer manufacture in the US? What about the list of exports I so kindly provided to you?

The whole electronics industry

The whole industry?

You think a country can prosper if they don't and can't make these high tech products?

Where do you imagine I said that?

Go ahead. Compare it.

Imagine if we actually made the stuff In the U.S.A that we buy from other countries: how many jobs would we have here?

I don't know, how many jobs?

How is your free trade working out for you?

It's working out fine. How is your bigger and ever more intrusive government working out for you?

Are you ever going to deliver what you promised earlier in the thread?

In the post above this one you said, " I'm for keeping the government as small as possible"

So which is it?

The U.s. can put high tariffs on imports and then eliminate the income tax on U.S. citizens and U.S corporations.

What percentage tariff do you imagine we would need to replace the income and corporate tax? Feel free to use an imported calculator, if you need help with the math.

Why are you for protecting China and China's war on the U.S.A (just economic war for now) at the expense of U.S. citizens

Aren't high tariffs "at the expense of U.S. citizens"?

the damn communist China government just bought a major U.S. bank how is that increasing our freedom.?

You're free to not bank with them. The government is free to tax their profits, if they earn any.

In the post above this one you said, “ I'm for keeping the government as small as possible”

So which is it?

I am for eliminating the income tax and property taxes on American citizens and busineesss INSIDE the U.S. . And replacing that with tarrifs on imported products( This how America ran up until the 20th century when the commies installed the Income tax amendment to the constitution in the early 20th century).the government needs revenue for the Army, border control, and keeping China products out of the U.S.A. But that's all I'm for the government doing. I'm for eliminating welfare, abolishing government schools, eliminating all the Agencies like the EPA,TSA, Energy dept, etc. All we need National security, border control and courts, and local police . Putting restrictions on china should fall under the dept of defense and customs and border control.

The U.S. imports almost 3 trillion dollars of products from other countries. The price that Americans pay for these imported goods is at least 3 times that much ( after the retail markup of course). so that's at least 10 trillion dollars that Americans are paying for imported goods. that is almost all the things we use. And it's getting worse so soon practically everything we use will be made in other countries. That is not sustainable.

China has figured out how to wage a new kind of war, mostly an economic war. I am for putting restrictions on China , taxing China and other countries( that's what tarrfis are).

We are in deep trouble . China is destroying America. Whose side are you on?

Wrong. We use a lot more than 238.6 billion a month.

No, that's just the price that retailers, distributors, wholesalers pay for the imported product. After the retail markeup the price Americans pay per months is closer to 1 trillion dollars per month. That is most of the stuff we use. Many times the retail markup is 3x times as much.

Are you for eliminating all the border control etc? That would allow any of the many billions of 3rd worlders to move to the U.S.a.. This would allow you or any other Americans to hire cheap labor.

I am for border control. Putting restrictions on other countries whether it is people, substances (like illegal drug), or products that destroy our industries. That doesn't restrict your freedom but China's and Mexico's freedom to flood the U.S.A with immigrants and industry destroying products. Any product that is made in China can be made in the U.S.A.. but if you want to buy China stuff so badly then you can move there(see you are still free somewhat in the U.S.A although we all lost freedoms and that is because of growth of domestic government when your free trade was exploding , so all your free trade hasn't helped all the freedoms we have lost from a growing government inside the U.S.A.

All the money China is making is allowing them to buy our politicians, banks ,etc. They already have a lot of politicians in their pockets (didn't China donate to Clinton? no wonder that Clinton signed the China free trade deal which started America's decline) .soon china will take over the U.S.A without firing a shot.

Great. What percentage do we need to charge to accomplish your worthy goal?

and keeping China products out of the U.S.A.

Wait a minute, you said you wanted these "very high tariffs" to raise revenue. Now you want the tariffs to keep the products out completely? You realize those are conflicting goals, don't you?

I'm for eliminating welfare, abolishing government schools, eliminating all the Agencies like the EPA,TSA, Energy dept, etc. All we need National security, border control and courts, and local police .

Sounds great!

The price that Americans pay for these imported goods is at least 3 times that much ( after the retail markup of course). so that's at least 10 trillion dollars that Americans are paying for imported goods.

Wow, they sure have some interesting math in your world.

Whose side are you on?

I'm on America's side. But in the real world, not in your imaginary world.

Are you okay? Trayvon bumping your head on the ground?

I want a nice double wall on the border. I want employers to use E-Verify and I want a few million illegals shipped out, for starters.

Any product that is made in China can be made in the U.S.A..

You should get right on that. Good luck!

we all lost freedoms and that is because of growth of domestic government when your free trade was exploding , so all your free trade hasn't helped all the freedoms we have lost from a growing government inside the U.S.A.

You're the one who wants a government so large it can tell us what we can buy and from where.

no wonder that Clinton signed the China free trade deal which started America's decline

Hate to break it to you, we don't have a free trade agreement with China. Good luck with that brain injury.

Well who is going to to all that? government that's who. So should you be accused of being for larger government because you want government to do these things? NO. And I agree with you on all those things for government to do against illegals. I also want that done to China and China products( that is for China products to be kept out of the U.S.A just like illegals should be kept out).So your point and those “free traders” point that I am for big government because I want China and their products to be stopped is invalid.

You free traders have no understanding of how fast the U.S. has been and is being deindustrialized. We are losing the technology and know how to manufacture even basic items much less high tech , or cutting edge technology products that are essential to not only our U.S.A's prosperity but to it's survival. This is a matter of life and death for many Americans and the future of the United States. The stakes couldn't be higher. Tens of thousands of factories have moved out of the U.S.A. to China . It's no wonder so many Americans are unemployed , living in tent citys, homeless and others literally dying.

So should you be accused of being for larger government because you want government to do these things?

No, because I can show Constitutional justification for government to secure our borders and protect us from invasion.

What is your Constitutional justification for protecting us from cheap plastic toys?

And, just because your position is so muddled, is it only cheap plastic toys from China, or cheap plastic toys from any foreign manufacturer?

Would you feel threatened if Canada became the new world-wide manufacturer of pink plastic flamingos?

You free traders have no understanding of how fast the U.S. has been and is being deindustrialized.

Maybe because it isn't happening?

It's no wonder so many Americans are unemployed , living in tent citys, confused about economics and weak in math. Oh, wait, we were talking about you, right?
