Last year marked the 150th anniversary of the American Civil War, commemorated by the Atlantic in a special issue, now available online. Although photography was still in its infancy, Civil War photographers produced thousands of images, bringing the harsh realities of war to those on the home front in a new and visceral way. As brother fought brother and the future of the United States was uncertain, the public appetite for information was fed by these images from the trenches, rivers, farms and cities that became fields of battle. Today's collection is part 1 of 3, covering the places of the Civil War: the battleships, prisons, hospitals, cities and farms where history was made. Tomorrow's installment will feature some of the people involved in the conflict, and on Friday I'll be sharing some of the amazing three-dimensional stereographs of the war. Keep in mind, as you view these photographs, that they were taken 150 years ago -- a glimpse of the United States, which was only 85 years old at the time.

This picture looks like it could have been taken recently. The houses don't look much different than modern houses.
CWI bump
Just wow.
Thanks for posting.
No power lines. No paved streets. No cars. No cell towers. Doesn’t look modern at all.
only difference is that they are built much better back then than the crap they build today and they did things by hand back then not all of this modern tools they have today.
Interesting artillery shells shown in #22.
Wasn’t a “Civil” War, it was the “War of Northern Aggression”!
“Wasnt a Civil War, it was the War of Northern Aggression!”
Yes..it..is. And we are just waiting for the next one. This time, the lib states will fold faster than France in 1940.
The title made me think of “The Civil War, Part 2”, as in where Obama might lead us. I hope and pray that he will step back from his overreach and avoid that catastrophe.
Great post. The next Civil War will be the Union AND Confederates fighting against the marxist evil ones.
Got some grapeshot there. Nasty anti-personnel shell. Google Napoleon and grapeshot.

Wow. Thanks for posting.
#22 is a great quality photo for those days.
Yup! These pictures have Northern propaganda written all over them.
Great Pictures though.
500,000 (or so) white people died to secure freedom for black people in the United States..
AND most all those black people could care less and hated and still hate white people.. for it.. Considering most all white people could not afford to own a slave anyway.. and didn’t..
America has been pretty much brain washed about American slavery.. Few can comprehend what happened.. American democrats have re-written history.. And republicans could care less or are complicit in it.. The Confederate Army was manned mostly by people that never owned or wanted to own a slave.. they fought for States Rights.. not slavery most of them..
