Those were all contributing reasons, but I think the most important reason was that Casey, Jr. was effective in hiding out and letting his surrogates do all the work of campaigning for him. His father was a popular former governor who stood up to the Democrat establishment in the 1992 convention over abortion and threatened to do the same in 1996 until failing health preventing him from doing so.

Senior died tragically in 2000 after a lingering illness and Junior rode the wave of sympathy to his own political career which reached its zenith in 2006. The Casey family was to Pennsylvania in 2006 basically what the Kennedy family was to New York and Massachusetts in the late 1960s. As long as Junior can avoid any real debate or confrontation, he will continue to bask in that glow even though it will wane with time.

No Republican could have beaten a Casey in 2006.

The GOP has an uphill battle in 2012 even though Junior has been basically nothing but an Obama stooge and Obama is widely unpopular here. Junior also hasn't said or done anything serious enough to get a lot of people p*ssed off. Indeed, his handlers carefully control his public appearances so that he appears before nothing but friendly crowds. Arlen Specter, at least, had the courage to face the public unscreened and unscripted. As did, of course, Rick Santorum.

And, BTW, the Charter School charge turned out to be totally bogus. The Santorum family owned real estate in Penn Hills, paid property taxes and occupied the place when Dad was home from Washington on business. They had every right to use the Cyber School option for their kids as bonafide taxpayers in the district. The Penn Hills school board member who made it an issue turned out to be a Democrat party hack whose own son was recently convicted here of being part of a home burglary ring. But this is now and then, it wasn't the truth that mattered, it was a fake narrative which was needed to sway a few votes which was, of course, picked up by the media.

He’s not politically savvy, intellectually astute, or personable enough to win

If that's the criteria, and I disagree with your assessment of those as regards Santorum, we'll have trouble even if Gingrich can pull out of his slump and start winning again, because nobody has ever called Gingrich "personable", and he's proven just in the past two years that his sense of "politically savvy" isn't all it's cracked up to be.

I am awake, its not a matter of the left trying to characterize the republican as evil, its the ability of the candidate to answer it, and Santorum does not have the intellect or ability to, and has shown that.

Newt has shown he has no problem standing up to the press and the left and calling them on it.

That’s A HUGE DIFFERENCE... Santorum is milk toast.

"Santorum can’t beat an old lady across the street."

And Newt can't resist joining an old lady on the couch to chat about global warming...

Not usually mentioned is that Santorum is an animal rights wacko. That affects farmers, hunters and pet owners all of whom are generally conservative but won’t vote for any candidate endorsed by PETA.

I actually live in PA, and have since 1986, and can tell you all the crap BS lines the Santorum camp and their surrogates and supporters are feeding that he lost PA just because he was a victim of circumstance is COMPLETE HOGWASH!!!

He was thrown out, and deservedly so, he burned too many bridged, talked out of both sides of his mouth far too often, etc etc etc.. While he is a social conservative, and is very good at telling folks what they want to hear, he has no qualms saying the exact opposite when the crowd wants to hear that.

I commend him for his social conservative stances, but this guy is not remotely the white horse folks outside of PA think he is. He was TOSSED, and TOSSED HARD for very very good reasons. He will be tossed just as hard nationally if he winds up at the top of the ticket, he just doesn’t have it folks, he’s playing above his pay grade.. WAY WAY beyond his pay grade.

OMG! A PICTURE! Run! Hide! OMG! OMG!

It's what he DID that counts. And he testified in Congress AGAINST Crap & Tax. And wrote a book Drill Here, Drill Now, Pay Less.

But you know that. And you think a picture is the boogeyman. Pffft!

occupied the place when Dad was home from Washington on business

No they didn't, the house was completely VACANT no furniture, no nothing.. they never occupied the home EVER, stop with the nonsense. In fact the home did get rented out to tenants at one point, the Santorums never occupied the house, temporarily or otherwise, but claimed it as their residence..

I pay property taxes on rental properties I own, but I don't claim my residence in them when I live somewhere else.. you are spreading a complete lie on this one... better get your facts straight.

If Santorum was available, would you consider him the right person for that senate race?

Santorum lost by 700,000 votes. The largest margin in U.S. Senatorial history.

Total irrellevant, Nixon was a national politician, before California and after, the attempt at the California race was a WTF were you thinking for Nixon..

trying to compare Santorum, WHO TO THIS VERY DAY WOULD LOSE PA BY 15+ POINTS IN A SENATE RACE, to Nixon’s weird foray to go for the Cali Governorship is not remotely relevant, and attempting to equate the two shows ignorance of political history of both Nixon and Santorum.

Santorum, to this very day could not win a statewide race in PA... not only would not win, but would LOSE BY A HUGE MARGIN! Comparing Santorum to Nixon is an gross overestimation of Santorum and a complete insult to Nixon.

Have you ever heard "Don't count your chickens before they're hatched?"

Florida still isn't decided as they didn't abide by the rules. What matters is the delegate count.

Newt has 31 delegates, without Fla, and Santorum has.....4.

The Friday Silliness thread is a bunch of nonsense. This thread falls more into the pile of organic fertilizer category.

Exactly. But Santorum is the one expected to drop out so that Newt can continue.

I fail to see how you think a brokered convention won’t wind up with a Romney nomination.. Newt honestly should stop attacking Romney for a while and focus on taking out Santorum, as long as he is in the race, you wind up with a split vote, and Romney wins by plurality.

Santorum is playing spoiler and ensuring a Romney win. I don’t see a brokered convention changing that outcome.

"Some voters were upset that Santorum billed the State of PA for his childrens’ cyberschool education, while they were living in VA."

So now he wants to haul them all to the White House & let US support them?

Deoes this guy work? What does he do for a living?

Newt, at 31, has more delegates. It’s the delegate count that matters. Santorum has 4 delegates.
