Left for Hillsdale College as conservative, returned Paulie. (vanity)

Posted on 12/24/2011 12:55:37 PM PST by carjic

Sorry for the vanity. My son has returned from Left for Hillsdale College 1 1/2 years ago as a conservative and returned as a rabid Paul Supporter. (vanity)I am despondent after debating with him. He is lost.

He’s not lost. He is strong enough to formulate his own opinions and you have given him a solid base from which to start. You should be proud.

Show respect for his position and (most important, in my experience) continue the dialog. If you can, help him think without telling him what to think.

And who knows ... you might learn something. ;)

Love him, he’ll grow.

I voted for George McGovern when I was 18. Carter when I was 22. Reagan man ever since, much to the dismay of my father. :-)

The GOP destroyed him. Tell voters they are conservative and used them like condoms. Come to power and acted like big gov statists with taxcuts but huge deficits because they cannot cut gov. Young people also understand how screwed they are. Forced to pay for Soc Security and knowing it will be bankrupted before they can even get any. Now with Wall Street implosion (another institution that GOP have great trust and faith in) and older people cannot retire (thus young ones cannot get jobs or even promotions for at least a decade). GOP tries to blame Dems but they themselves were asleep at the switch when Wall Street invented liar loans and sold them off as AAA mortgage backed securities. Dem and GOP ignored warnings and were enamored by Wall Street bank lobbyists. Ron Paul had been warning about bankers, huge gov spending and deficits, the Fed Reserve which serves bankers and not US, failure of SEC etc etc. Can you blame him for accepting Ron Paul (even if his foreign policy viewpoints are wrong)??? 2012 and the years to come will be a great challenge to this nation as a young generation will stagnate for ten years minimum before the economy picks up and expands. We will have a lost generation especially the ones who went to college, accumulated tuition debt and graduated with useless diplomas. Like it or not, this will have an impact on the future generations’ attitude towards Wall Street, government and the two major political parties.

It’s ok to not agree on everything. Keep a good relationship. He will mature.

Be happy he isn’t a communist. A “paulie” understands freedom is incompatible with the welfare and warfare state.

If he is supporting Ron Paul as part of a personality cult I would be worried. But I doubt that is the case; certainly not typical of Paul's supporters. So I would start by no longer referring to him as a "Paulie."

It sounds like he is searching for consistency in applying the principles of small government (libertarians are essentially dogmatically consistent conservatives - small government across the board). As he gets older he will learn when it is appropriate to make exceptions. In the meantime, I would...listen.

He has a good foundation and will come around.

Dittos. I went through the very same progression in this life. The boy will come around because he's got a solid foundation to return to.

At least he’s only 19....mine is 29 and is a rabid Paul supporter. In fact, instead of coming home for Christmas he’s going to Iowa to work on the Paul campaign. We absolutely cannot discuss politics anymore as it gets ugly. This all started in the military.

Our govt has given us 20% unemployment, spreading slums, blatant corruption and a lying media. I understand his pessimism. rp is a junior hitler and we’re going to live it again, just here in America. Your son is panicked about his future. I don’t blame him.

This same thing happened to me. My daughter is a physics major at University of Colorado at Boulder. The main thing she likes is his anti-military foreign policies.

As a history major I would suspect that the more history that he learns the more he will come to realize that isolationism and passivism simply lead more quickly to war.

It is an inescapable fact that most of the world is lead by dictators that have illusions of dominating their neighbors.

Such people look upon passivist as weak people that will not take up arms to defend themselves. This is what got first Britain and then us in to WW II.

Ron Paul has many positions which are ok. That said, go through the ron paul newsletter fiasco with your son. Then ask how could he let this crap be sent in his name (since being an open boarders racist is impossible) Its about managing.

Then look up the 12th Imam. Imanutajob and the ruling clerics are all 12vers. When you add not caring in fact hoping for a massacre of your own people to reestablish a global caliphate, and Imanutajobs involvement with using poor old men and children as suicide mine clearing machines, can his position on iran and the bomb be justified. MAD US/USSR is not a restraining factor with a psychotic iranian leadership. That position alone disqualifies him from being POTUS/CIC.

I agree, don’t worry about the Ron Paul thing.
I can see why some young conservatives might be attracted to Ron Paul for now. But he is getting a good grounding at Hillsdale and with a little maturity later one he will be fine. Also, much better to send him to Hillsdale and have to hear about Ron Paul now than sending him almost anywhere else and then having to deal with him being a total liberal forever. AFter all, Ron Paul is actually right on some things. Liberals are wrong on just about everything.

When my son returned from four years at university, I discovered I had spent a fortune to have him lobotomized.
The universities are crimes against humanity.

The person who is the subject of this thread is generating a useless degree: history and politics. Both of these subjects are good hobbies.

I hope he does not expect a business to hire him based on his knowledge of history and politics. He should pursue meaningful internship opportunities to make up for his choice of majors.
